Laborers were able to find more jobs mainly in fields to pick cotton because that was in high demand. The sewing machine also provided women with jobs because sewing clothes and other things was needed in society. The advantages were that the economy was flourishing and production was increasing. A disadvantage was that slavery came back to life.

Yes. Westward expansion caused this country to grow in size rapidly. So many people were coming into this country that fast modes of transportation was needed. Farmers needed to increase production to keep up with the demand of the market and machines and slaves helped with that. Demographically the country was becoming industrialized and the country had good farming land in the South and good factory land in the North.

What they contributed to American culture was the transcendentalists movement, the Shakers who made a redefinition of traditional sexuality and gender roles central to their society and created a society that was separated and protected from the chaos and disorder that they believed had come to characterize American life as a whole and the religious group the Mormons.

In this chapter, the authors reference a British critic in 1820 who said, “In the four quarters of the globe who reads an American book, or goes to an American play, or looks at an American picture or statue?” Yet, they also trace the development of uniquely American forms of art, architecture, and literature in the nineteenth century. As you read this chapter, can you explain the continuities and changes in American art, architecture, and literature from 1790 to 1860?
