The key factor in keeping up with environmental changes involves awareness.  Those organizations that build their business around the concept of generating good decision-making to stay afloat and ahead in their industry, hire the right people, use analytics to study business trends, consider the importance of using IS along with IT and take the time to clearly think before acting and lastly, to learn from their prior mistakes and other companies successes and failures.

For example, people have access to information systems that allow them to order groceries online through insta-cart and amazon, which then they are delivered to their place of residence. Due the shift in the environment through the changes in customer preferences on how to get groceries, other companies such as Wal-mart integrated a similar system where customers order groceries online and their groceries are brought to their car once they go pick them up. This is just one industry where keeping up with environmental shifts allows companies to stay competitive. Regardless of my actions, the change will happen and therefore it is important to be able to flex with market shifts and demands in order to remain competitive. Additionally, flexibility grows effectiveness AND efficiency, not just one or the other. My organization, being a public insitiution and military in nature, is very slow to shift to change; but my individual team is highly prepared. We have weekly trainings discussing new developments in the Navy and global enviroments, increases in technology regarding healthcare and dentistry, and improvements of IT that we are experimenting with. Additionally, my team knows that they can bring any new information to me and each other, as long as it builds the cooperativeness between us all and doesnt break down any relationships. If you or your company lose sight of the customer or resist change in the end your company will loose market share to another company willing to stay current with the consumers wants. If you look at the way we pay for things a few years ago people didn't carry as much cash but had a wallet full of plastic cards. But today people dont even carry cards everything in on their phone. (I'm still skeptical about touch pay)  When i go to Starbucks I just whip out my phone and pay for it with my app. 

On thing I do to stay current is have a daily new report created of different subjects I am interested in and emailed to me by google. I find that podcasts and youtube videos that are of my interest keep me relevant to shifts in my environment. I don't watch TV or listen to the radio anymore.
