Summary Of Chapter 16-17

In chapter 16, the monsoon arrives and the tension builds between the boys. During the monsoon their group dynamics begin to change after Gopal saves everyone four times. When Gopal unplugged the tv, Night Chatterer, Rocking Boy and Dimple Chin start to think of him as the new leader. Thick Fingers doesn’t think Gopal is the new leader although he still thanks him. However Gray Cloud is infuriated by Gopal because he is afraid of losing his power over everyone else. He threatens Gopal several times and calls Thick Fingers a traitor on page 175 for not letting him beat up Gopal. Also, GC and Thick Fingers split up because when Dimple Chin spoke out against GC and GC tried to hit him Thick Fingers immediately stopped GC by pulling him back because Thick Fingers is very protective of Dimple Chin. I predict that in the next few chapters it will be Gopal being the leader amongst the boys and GC being the bully to stop every plan. The theme for this chapter is Hope vs Despair “One night I have a brilliant plan. If somehow I can get a piece of paper and pencil, write a note and float it out the window, then someone might read it and rescue me.” Page 169. I think this quote shows how even after all Gopal has been through he is still persistent. Also this shows how Gopal has hope of being freed in a time of despair.

In chapter 17, Gopal dreams about re-experiencing the monsoon at Jamas house surrounded by his family. While Gopal is there he lets Sita and Naren play with his cards to spend the time. Also later in the chapter Aai and Gopal see a perfectly fine pan being carried away by the water and they can’t go and get it because it would be far too dangerous. I think the author put this in the book to represent how everything they want seemed so close from far away but zoomed up it is a lot harder and more dangerous for Gopal and his Family. I think this shows how Gopal is kind of used to disappointment because he doesn’t even try to argue with his mother. I predict that Gopal will escape from Scar and once he does he will want to do anything to be back with his family. I think the theme is dreams vs Reality. “I close my eyes to see if I can crawl back to my dream and touch Aai’s face. She is gone.” Page 183. I believe this quote shows how when Gopal wakes up his desire is to go back to the dream and escape from his reality.

Chapter 16:
The monsoon night was the night Scar left earlier and threatened them: ‘ ‘‘ I heard on the TV that a storm is moving up, so I am going to leave now. Make sure you close the shutters before you go to bed. If a single frame gets wet, I’ll turn you into murga’’ ’ (Sheth, 169). Murga means chicken.
As a boom is heard, Dimpled chin covers his ears. Thick fingers stays near him, comforting him. Gopal, the main character, has a feeling that Night Chatterer is praying, for his lips are moving. GC, the rude boy, is also looking concerned. Rocking Boy is the only one rocking back and forth, back and forth, like usual. Gopal notices his nails have dug into his palms. Everyone is not as normal and quiet on monsoon nights. Change. They might have stayed there a long time and are still acting differently, as if it is the end of the world or Scar’s punishments are more terrible on rainy nights.

As the boys eat early, Night Chatterer talks for the first time warning everyone of a strange event. ‘ ‘‘Wa-wa-water!’’ Night Chatterer screams in a high-pitched voice, pointing at the back door. This is the first time he has talked. I stare at him and then at the water seeping from under the door. It is creeping into the room slowly, but if the rain continues like this, it could cover the entire floor.’ (Sheth, 175). It is clear Night Chatterer is scared of the beating, or maybe because water is getting in the factory. Gopal gives the idea of putting all the frames together, but of course, GC will doubt that. ‘ ‘‘Just because you want to?’’ ’. (Sheth, 175). After that, all the boys put the boxes of picture frames upstairs with teamwork. Well, everyone except GC. The hope of everyone working together vanishes, hope vs despair, and GC later takes the credit for having the idea. I predict that later GC will be kind, for if everyone is working together besides GC he will be left out. He likes to be living in the factory, but deep down inside he might have wanted to leave this awful place a long time ago. The exposition(tiny information at the beginning of stories) in the beginning of the plot would be Gopal’s family having no money to return a debt and no food and needing to move to Mumbai. Then the rising action would be Gopal believing in a stranger, and being drugged and taken to a strange place. The climax of the story is where Gopal is living in a horrible, rectangular room where he is hurt the first two days and 5 other boys are being forced to work for no money, they are beaten up a lot, and no hopes of escaping. Also the climaxes are also the boys being hurt badly, repeated times. The falling action later on in the book will be Scar sending Gopal to get some things for him and Gopal leaving a note of help. The denouement, or the end of the problem is that 3 men come rescue the boys and Scar goes to jail, and Gopal is taken to see his family, and especially a certain someone special.
Chapter 17:
Gopal is dreaming. Dreams are little compared to different realities, or dreams vs reality. For Gopal, his dream is he is in Jama’s house and water is entering the house. Gopal distracts Naren and Sita, his brother and sister, by handing cards for them to play. While the twins are playing, Aai and Gopal get to work by getting buckets, filling them with the water spilled on the floor and dumping them outside through the window, repeatedly, but the water stays the same level. After stopping dumping water, Gopal notices the rain is gone, and the best part is that the water is not coming in anymore. As Aai and Gopal see a perfect aluminum pan floating in the water, Aai says to Gopal: ‘ ‘‘Let’s not upset them,’’ ’(Sheth, 182) and she means the twins. Gopal has a terrible thought that if Naren and Sita find out a pan and other different objects are floating in the water, they would be likely to go treasure-hunting, and treasure-hunting might make them drown in knee-high water. Aai notices Gopal shiver with the thought and asks if he is cold (Sheth, 183). Before saying anything Gopal wakes up still shivering. That is when he notices the real life he has right now is glue’s smell, the jute bag, and mosquito bites. We, readers, notice that Gopal changed by being so much time in the frame ‘factory’ that he isn’t feeling as bad and sad as before as the thought of his family comes to mind. My prediction is that Gopal will share more stories with the boys. The beginning of the plot would be that first, there is rain, and it keeps rising. Then the water is entering Jama’s home, and Aai and Gopal cannot get water from the floor and dump it out. There, the water cannot be stopped and the same amount of water keeps coming in. But happily, the rain is gone and water is not entering the house anymore. The chapter ends with Gopal realizing he woke up and not being able to talk to Aai. Then questions swirl his head like trees waving their branches as a strong wind passes by.

In chapter 16, it begins with Gopal having a plan to get help and than leave. But than scar leaves due to a storm that will arrive. This storm continued for a long time and this wasn't good. Staying closed in the house with no scar was making GC get madder but Thick Fingers act's mature. Gopal's intelligence helps them get down from the workshop and eat. Before eating Gopal unplugged the T.V. and this is where the tension grew. Rocking boy, Dimpled chin and even night chatter where kind of acting like Gopal was the new leader and this made GC madder. Than for the first time Night chatter talks and they realize that the water from the rain was coming under the door and will slowly flood the room. That's when Gopal comes up with the idea to move the boxes up so they won't get wet. GC doesn't help. towards the end of the chapter we find out night chatters name Roshan. Than GC challenges him (night chatter) that he is afraid of the drack and then that's when Gopal pulls out the flashlight. And than again, GC says that Gopal stole that flashlight. And rocking boy sustains Gopal like a true friend. At the really, really end he wonders if he should tell them a kahani.

chapter 17,

At the beginning of chapter 16 Gopal has an Idea to escape. A storm comes and Scar leaves early and they stay alone. Everyone is scared and anxious so they decide to eat early. When they try to go down they notice Scar forgot to put up the ladder. They work together and Gopal gets down. While he is down there alone he tries to execute his plan but it doesn't work. He puts the ladder up and brings down the others. He remembers about the TV being plugged in and saves everyone from a possible electric shock. After that he takes charge. Thick finger protects the boys from GC and protects Dimple chin. Thick fingers does not let him touch the other boys especially not Dimple chin. They work together to get the boxes up but GC does not help. After they are all upstairs the lights go out and they are left in the dark. Night chatter starts crying but no one knows who is crying and can't know because they don't know each other's names. Dimple chin reveals his name Roshan. And Gopal trusts almost everyone enough to reveal his flashlight. He thinks about sharing a story but doesn't. Character development: Thick fingers have changed, he has become more protective of others especially dimple chin and does not let GC hit the others. GC has become the meanest and didn't want to help them. Night chatter became braver and even revealed his name, Roshan. Gopal starts to trust thick fingers and trust almost everyone enough to reveal his flashlight. Summary of plot development: The story is on it's climax where the most action is happening, then being stuck there and there is no resolution yet. Predictions : I predict soon Gopal will find a way out and won't leave his friends behind because he is such a kind person and won't leave them behind. Some characters will become braver and nicer.

Chapter 17 was a dream he dreamt of a storm like the one he is in but as if he were back home with his family. Gopal and Aai try to take out the water but it seems nothing is happening. The water continues the same. Aai says it can't rain forever, it will stop. So it will stop flooding. There is still hope and the rain stops. It is dangerous outside with all the flooding. And it isn't like the street he used to know. He shivers at the thought of the twins getting hurt and wakes up. As soon as he's awake he wants to go back to the dream but can't then think about if he's ever getting out of there.

Chatper 16:

Chapter 16 is initially presented with Gopal having an idea on how to escape Scar's punishing lair. But before Gopal can stretch that plan, Scar leaves due to a menacing storm. When the boys are ready to go eat, they notice the apsent ladder. Consequently, the boys find a way to descend. Out of curiosity, Gopal checks out the TV, but notices that it is plugged in and he knows that water and electricity when mixed, dont have a pretty result. He finds a way to safely disconnecct the TV cable, which impress the boys and they start thinking of him as the new leader. Thick Fingers dosent really think he is that special. Though Gopal has more serious things to worry about, because as he start being praised, he has to witness GC's rage against him, Gray Clouds feeling threatened by Gopal. GC start beating up Rocking Boy, Roshan, but can merely look at Dimpled Chin, Sahil, with evil eyes because Thick Fingers stops him. Gopal takes notice of Thick Finger's preference and protection when Dimpled Chin is threatened.

Chapter 17:

Chapter 17 is a dream that Gopal has, it takes place in Jama's house. The house is being flooded and Aai and Gopal help take the water away. A symbolic part of the dream was whne Aai and Gopal spot a perefect pan that they were in need in the middle of the floodstream. Gopal asks Aai if he can get it, but hs is restricted to do so due to the danger that it would be for them to venture out in the river to get the pan. Instead, they just watch in pain the perfectly needed pan wash away with rubbish. It is a contrast between dreams vs. reality.

Chapter 16: When Scar leaves the factory because of an upcoming storm, Gopal plans to write on a sticky note with one of Scar's pencils, through it outside when it's in a newspaper, hoping someone might read it. Dimpled Chin ends up asking Gopal if they can eat, instead of asking Thick Fingers. GC becomes upset because the boys are starting to see Gopal as a leader. GC calls Thick Fingers a traitor for not letting him beat Gopal up, and Thick Fingers protects Dimpled Chin from GC. I think this is because Dimpled Chin and Thick Fingers knew each other before the factory. This chapter has a hope vs despair theme, because Gopal still has hope that they can escape.

Chapter 17:
Gopal had a dream about being in Jama's house, with Aai, Naren, and Sita. The house slowly starts flooding, and at the start of the dream Naren and Sita are laughing while drinking tea and roti Aai gave them. Aai and Gopal get buckets to try and lower the water level, but it ends up not working. They end up needing to stack mattresses on top of each other. The rain eventually stops, and Aai and Gopal go out onto the street to see how it looks like. Things like underwear, combs, and pencils drift along the street. And the street doesn't look live a street anymore. Gopal describes the smell of glue, mosquito bites and the feel of jute in the back of his throat. This chapter has a theme of dream vs reality.

Chapter 16 and 17,

After Gopal realizes that trying to take the leader position would bring GC and thick fingers against him, Gopal has an idea to escape, but he needs to steal Scar’s pencil. When the boys go down to eat Dimpled chin asks Gopal if they can eat, showing that DimpledChin is on Gopal’s side and Gopal is rising in the ‘hierarchy’ amongst the boys. Another fact to prove my assumption is when Rocking Boy stands up for Gopal and GC gets angry and beats him, and when Gopal tries to help him,he slaps Gopal across the face. GC has gotten angry because of people standing on Gopal's side. Thick Fingers pushes GC away making the boys' connection weaker. Gopal saves the frames from getting wet so he does not get a beating. Night chatterer is scared and reveals his name which could mean that also the others will reveal their name. Gopal has a dream of being home and then when it turns out to be fake he loses hope and doubts himself which relates to the theme Hope vs. Despair.

CHAPTER 16

In chapter 16 we learn alot about GC Gopal and Thick Fingers. For GC we learn that he is now totally against Gopal even with his good leadership, for example on page 175: "We should take the boxes of frames up" I say. "Just because you want to? GC says. We also see that thick thinkers try to be a better leader letting Gopal make tea even when GC is presorin to the opposite. Also when he stops a fight that GC was making. The plot is basically Gopal needing to make decisions of leadership and GC trying to stop him. I predict that in the future everyone will accept Gopal as a leader and then Gopal will help everyone escape.

CHAPTER 17

The plot of the chapter is a dream that Gopal is having. The dream is not even that extraordinary. It's Just a normal rainy day with his family. From that we learn that he is so homesick that his dream is a normal day with his family. I predict that the strength of seeing his family again will give him the strength to make an escape plan out of that prison.
