When the British surrendered to the Japanese, the Japanese started changing things such as during school. Before the Japanese occupation, most of the people were able to go school and paid their school fees. But after the Japanese occupation, the school fees soared and most of them could not go to school because of financial problems. Not only that, before they go to the classroom and start their lessons, they had to assemble at one place where everyone is present and had to face North-East in the direction of the Japanese Emperor in Tokyo to sing the national anthem [Kimigayo]. After singing they had to marched back to their classroom instead of walking normally. Before Japanese occupation, they need to sing the national anthem but they do not need to face North-East and they can just just face the British flag and bow. After the Japanese occupation, the Japanese started to sell Japanese books, also started to teach Japanese to change from British to Japanese culture. The Japanese also influenced them by letting them watch the probaganda film, making them think that the Japanese are good and should listen and follow the Japanese. This shows that the Japanese occupation brought changes to the lives of the teenagers in Singapore.
