A young couple -Della and Jim- love each other, but they are too poor to afford Christmas gifts. Della only has $1.87, so she sells her beautiful, prized hair for 20 dollars. She misses her hair but the money is enough to buy Jim a nice watch chain. However, when she reaches home to give her husband her present, she realizes he sold his watch to buy her a comb. In the end, neither of them can use their gifts, since they both sold their most valuable item.
