What I knew about Painting before taking the Module

Painting is a form of art that uses four mediums: flat surface, paint brush, paint and water. It is expressed in blended brush strokes on a flat surface that depicts images, sceneries, and representations that is limited in 2-dimensional form. It is one of the most popular art forms used today, especially in activities for kids, projects for school, art workshops and many more. In this form of art, it is essential to know about the color wheel because the painter is only given a limited tube set of colors. Some of the well-known methods of painting I knew before taking the Module were watercolor, acrylic and oil painting. Watercolor painting commonly uses paper for putting one’s art and water for blending and painting colors. Next, for Acrylic painting, it can already be applied onto canvas. Its paint dries quickly which requires the artist to approach and use mediums at a certain speed. Lastly for oil painting, it is similar to Acrylic, but it requires paint thinner to remove its blemish on the painter’s skin or materials. Every form of painting requires a level of knowledge and expertise that takes years to master. There are artists who only uses oil painting in their art career.

Painting is not only limited to canvas and paper, there are also mural paintings. This gives a bigger picture for the painter and spectators to see the artwork.

What I learned in the module about the form of painting as a Fine Art

Painting as an art form is flat, 2-dimensional and bounded on size and used surface such as canvas, paper and wall. It is expressed in different forms, elements, principles that depicts a specific subject and theme.

It emerged in the Renaissance period. Well-known artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael and Michaelangelo have contributed to the field of fine arts, focusing on themes pertaining to the Christian religion. Each one of them had different ways of expressing their paintings.

Each element is uniquely special in the painting. In the process of making the fine art work, it solely depends on the materials, techniques, style and execution of the artist. From the Renaissance painters such as Raphael and Michaelangelo, they showed different styles and techniques of using elements in such a way it still resulted to a beautiful piece of artwork.

Compared to architecture and sculpture, painting is distinguished for its 2-dimensional form and flatness. In painting, it is bounded only on any flat surface. It is not as laborious like architecture and sculpture which requires one to build and shape his or her art form to create its tangible art forms.

Mediums used in this art form are oil, acrylic, watercolor, tempera, wax and mixed.

It commonly represents subjects that is seen in artworks of the painters. These subjects are in the form of landscape, portraits, still life, genre, history, mythology and religion. In contrary to its subject representation, there are also abstract paintings that does not depict any specific subject on the artwork.

Painting as a fine artwork maintains a level of coherence in terms of its elements: colors, highlights, shadows, shapes, lines, and spaces. These elements connect together with its respective principles which unify it as a whole. The beauty and emphasis of the figures, objects, foreground, and background in a painting depend on how the artist would apply the elements that would build a relationship. Their relationship brings a plethora of emotions, feelings and harmony of the painting that would evoke the beauty of it.

Painting should be interpreted and appreciated as a whole. Typically, most paintings represent a subject or theme that would be the basis for the viewer’s beauty and interpretation. In this module, we should always take note of the elements and principles used and how they relate to each other in order to understand and enlighten our perspective and appreciation to the painting. We acknowledge the lights and shadows, intensity of highlights, space, the push and pull, focal point, and contrast of colors. These details we recognize simply shows the style and execution of the artist and how it can also be similar to his other paintings.
