Addiction Looked At As A Disease

Addiction was first deemed a disease in 1935 when treatment organization alcoholics anonymous labeled alcoholism as an addiction. Dr Alan I. Leshner claims that drug addicts have different chemical formation in their brains than non-addicts. When losing drug virginity, there is a slight chemical alteration in the brain. After a period of regular use, chemical formations become more significant and the term "user" changes to "addict." This is when use is no longer voluntary. Research has shown that if one has genetic relationship to an addict of some sort, then chances of getting hooked easier than the common being is four times higher. This is why Dr.Herbert Kleber, medical director of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse in New York, believes that therapy should be analyzed by the social context and one should be medicated through specific studies.

Medicating The Addicts

Many of those who believe that addiction is a disease turn to medication. But this is looked at as non-effective many times because not many drugs can be medically helped. For cocaine, Dopamine Blockers have been used, and essentially these just block the neuro transmitters that spit out dopamine. Unfortunately, these have side effects which cause depression, lack of motivation and drooling.Opiate addicts have a different source of medication through Methadone. not necessarily medicine, methadone is just a weaker methamphetamine which lasts longer. it is used to stop addiction. Buprenorphine is a newly researched drug which combines methadome and naltrexon, a drug which blocks receptors so a "high" can not be achieved. This is not yet approved and has not yet been released.

There are a lot of different types of treatment centers which focus on addiction. 12-step recovery programs include Alcoholics Anonymous, and Marijuana Anonymous. The "Minnesota Model" is an inpatient stay, lasting 10-28 days. this program llooks to isolate drug users from environments in which they declared addiction. A similar but cheaper method is the "Halfway House." In this case residents work during the day and are treated at night."The Oxford House" is moe of a support-structured style, where addict are grouped and encourage one another to stay sober.

Addiction as a Personal Choice

Although regular drug abuse may induce compulsive behavior, drug addicts always retain a degree of control over their behavior. Dr. Gene M. Heyman, proffessor at Harvard, argues that just because the drug changes chemical formations, it does not completely takeover. Many programs believe that addiction is more of a personal choice and can be overcome. Secular Organizations for Sobriety(SOS) is a program neileves an individual is responsible for reaching sobriety. All in all, there are many programs that focus more on the spiritual side of recovery.

Researchers are starting to believe that drug addiction has its roots from a theory of "social dysfunction." The main point of this is that "in order to treat addiction, one must address the reasons behind the addiction. " Basically, failing economic communities and backgrounds are a main cause. People are starting to think that money should go to the root cause, like the children and education.Elliot Currie, Criminologist at the Center for the Study of Law and Society at the University of California at Berkeley, believes that more treatment programs and more creative ways should be bred.
