The key concept for this theory is the “social interaction”, which leads to meaningful interaction.
Vigotsky also describes learning in two levels: the actual developmental level for already incorporated knowledge and the concept of potential developmental level for the knowledge we acquire after we learn. They acquire knowledge when their mental structure is ready for it (readiness principle). For this theory, maturation precedes learning.

Piaget also describes learning in one level development: When we receive knowledge our mental structure goes through the process of assimilation. When we incorporate that knowledge we go through the accommodation process. Finally, when we connect the new knowledge with the previous one, we go through the adaptation process and there's equilibrium again.

This theory also studies cognitive growth. According to this school of thought, to learn something we should tie up the new items to the already existing cognitive concepts. Learning can be divided into rote learning, where the new concepts are isolated and not associated with meaningful learning, where we connect the new material with the established entities in cognitive structure. This last type leads to retention. Although meaningfulness can also be manufactured if it is necessary or the person is highly motivated to do so.
Another important concept tackled by this theory is the “systematic forgetting”. Both previous concepts lead to learning but in the first case, the retention is short, while in the second case the retention is longer.
