The students in the book answer questions they originally posed, and I would like my 2nd/3rd grade students to do the same. Ask a question they would like answered, then we would work together to answer the questions they came up with.

Papp writes this story from the angle of a young boy who helps his father in a time of war. It is with his genius idea that the soldiers fool the British Army and save the town. This book can be incorporated into a history lesson about the war of 1812 in late elementary school, or early middle. An activity that can be used would be to have the students do a writing activity to come up with a way they can "protect the town".

Shel Silverstein writes books in a way that makes them easy to read. However he does encompass vocabulary for younger audiences, about kindergarten. Since his illustrations are black and white, I would make them coloring pages. Instead of a color by number, I would place vocabulary found throughout the book on objects found on the pages. Then, I would place a word on the board. A class discussion would open up to what they word means, and then the students would color that word that matches a specific color on their page.
