and my dad read only once and his comment was it was so easy  but only thing was hard was to read the question. My dad used algebra and then he used guessed how old was the small brother's age and he didn't know that it was sterategy. My mum's comment was if the smaller brothers age wasn't limited by 4, it will be more difficult. She solved it the same way as me. My dad said it the same way. The clue that helped him the most was my brother is not at school. half of five is not a whole number and it needed to be over five.
 so she tried six and 3 for the brothers but  3 didn't work because half of three is not a whole number either .

so then she tried 8 and 4 which works mum would be 40 and dad would be 42.

My grandma took 4 minutes to work out the answer and the mum was 40 and the dad was 45 the big boy was 5 and the little boy was 4 my grandma got the right answer.

He first wrote brother little and brother big. Then he wrote mum and dad. He started with Brother young. Because the ages were whole numbers brother young could only be 2 or 4. He Thought that 20 was a bit young for a mother so he thought that the young brother could only be 4. Then he calcuolated the brother big  must be 8. After that he wrote 8x5 and that was 40 for mum.
