The invention of the microphone in the 1920's allowed the soothing, jazz-feel style to be born. The singers, commonly referred to as Crooners, are typically backed up by an orchestra, a piano, or even a big band. The popularity of Crooning decreased when different genres of music dominated the "popular music"  name, rock 'n' roll being one of them. Sinatra collabed with fellow singer Dinah Shore. On January 1st, 1938, Frank started working at a roadhouse, The Rustic Cabin, on Route 9W near Alpine NJ that was in need of a waiter that had the ability to wow the customers with his singing voice. On July, 1939, Sinatra recorded his first record backed up by Harry James' trumpet. The song, "From The Bottom of My Heart" is followed by "Melancholy Mood" on the Brunswick label. Unfortunately, neither song made it big. As his singles were frequently heard across the country, Sinatra was named top male vocalist of the year in 1941 by Billboard. Frank Sinatra toured along with fellow singers Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Ginger Rogers, and many more. In February of 1944, Sinatra signed a $1.5 million contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Sinatra even entered the acting industry as he starred in a 10 minute short film called "The House I Live In", that won him a special academy award. Sinatra lost his contracts in 1950, but came back with a bang as he signed a contract with Capitol Records in 1953 and won an Oscar for his role in "From Here to Eternity" in 1954. Many songs from Capitol were released such as "I Get a Kick Out of You," "A Foggy Day," " My Funny Valentine" and "They Can't Take That Away form Me." all apart of the album "Songs for Young Lovers". Sinatra retired briefly in the 70's, but came back in 1973.
