My name is Matthew Rizzolo and I am a Freshman studying Mechanical Engineering at UT Austin. I was born in San Antonio, Texas and have lived there my whole life but I love Austin. I am the third generation of my family to attend UT following in the steps of my grandfather and my father. Playing sports is a big activity of mine as I am on the club Ultimate Frisbee team here at UT and enjoy playing basketball and running outside as well. Music is also an interest of mine from playing the piano and guitar to attending concerts of my favorite bands, especially at ACL music festival. One day I hope to travel around the world and experience firsthand the different cultures and lifestyles that I have read and heard about my whole life.

The example from Ferris Bueller's Day Off shows the contrast between a particularist person in Ferris, and a very universalistic person in his friend Cameron. Cameron finds it very hard to break any rules set by his dad and fears the consequences and Ferris is the complete opposite, doing anything that he wants to so that he can have fun no matter what the rule is. This universalistic personality is also seen from Hermione in the Harry Potter series. In this clip she is seen to be more concerned about the consequences of breaking a school rule than dying, which is a rather extreme form of universalism. Another extreme form of universalism can be observed in the book 1984 by George Orwell. The government squashes out any particularism or unique qualities that a person may have and attempts to make them all the same and strictly abide by the rules. Contrasting with this, Coca Cola put out individually named bottles making each one unique. This is a great example of something that is particularist and shows how people are attracted by products that seem as if they are one of a kind.

Explanation:

To display Individualism, I chose the Pokemon theme song and the movie Rocky. The first line of the Pokemon theme states: "I want to be the very best like no one ever was", and goes on to explain how hard the main character, Ash, wants to work his way up through much effort and training to be the best that there is. Rocky, shares a similar theme to this in which the character Rocky trains and works very hard to achieve victory. I believe that these exemplify the idea of an individualism very well as it shows how they aim to progress through their own efforts. To show communitarianism, I chose a clip from the Dark Knight which shows Batman deciding to frame himself to be a villain for the sake of Gotham. You can see through this scene that Batman truly believes that what is best for the community of Gotham is above all else, even if it means putting himself in danger and making everybody hate him. My other example for communitarianism shows a group of Chinese people worshiping a shrine to their ancestors. This aspect of their culture exemplifies how they are called to do good deeds and succeed in order to honor their family, and not for personal gain. This is a good example showing how an individual's success is really credited to ones family, closely relating to communitarianism.

Showing specificity, I first chose a cartoon showing the divided nature of politics in America. This binary structure supports the idea of specificity in the way that things are either one or the other with little to no middle ground. The other picture I chose demonstrates specificity by how much people value statistics in sports. Analyst and sports fans often over emphasize the stats of one player and attribute their good stats to their individual abilities rather than giving credit for the team. For diffuseness, I chose the international Toyota webpage because it speaks so much about their impact on the environment. This makes sense because they are trying to get a global view on their product as something that is beneficial for the whole world. For my last example, I chose a popular commercial for Extra Gum. The commercial exemplifies diffuseness because rather than focusing on the product itself, the commercial invokes emotion and creates a response from the audience to make them buy the product.

The Trompenaar and Hampden-Turner theory of Achieved vs. Ascribed can be seen in many places in society and popular culture today. My first two examples of Oprah and the Kardashians show the polar opposites of one who has achieved vs people who are famous, but not for anything they have done. Oprah worked her way up from being poor to being an incredibly wealthy through her achievements and successes in her life. The Kardashians on the other hand are well known and wealthy, but haven't done anything spectacular to get them there. They have then used this given popularity to create other things such as hair products or TV shows, but these achievements came from their previously received popularity. The plot of Hunger Games exhibits the exaggeration of achievement where the winner is the only one that matters, and in this extreme case, everybody else who loses dies. Johnny Manziel is an example of ascribed side of this because he had a somewhat false sense of entitlement that since he was so good in college, he would therefore be very good in the NFL. This mentality led him to lose focus on the game and do irresponsible things off the field which led to his downfall as a professional athlete.

A great example of inner is shown very clearly by Yoda teaching Luke how to use the force. He emphasizes to Luke many times that the power of the force is inside of him an that he just needs to find that power within himself, giving off the idea that "there is no such thing as luck". Similarly, in Harry potter and the Order of the Phoenix, a prophecy was given that Harry was the chosen one and the power to defeat Voldemort is within him; it is a power that he possesses, which further promotes this idea of inner thinking. On the outer side of the spectrum, horoscopes are a perfect example of the idea that you have a fate that is dependent on something on the outside. In this case, people who follow horoscopes closely believe that their fates lie within the stars and whatever the formation was in the sky when you were born influences your life and your personality. The idea of karma, as shown in my last example, also shows there are things that happen to you that are out of your control. A person or a culture with an inner sort of mentality would likely not believe in karma and instead think if good things were going to happen to them, that they would be the ones personally responsible for that.

On the sequential side of this theory, which looks at time as linear and just a ticking clock, I first used a picture of a now hiring sign at McDonalds. By showing an estimated rate of $9-$11 per hour, this is ultimately valuing somebody's time if they were to work there. The concept of hourly wages follows this concept that time has a certain value for a certain job that is to be preformed. Also showing this, I used a recent example from the movie Passengers. On a very long journey to a new star system, hundreds of people are put into an induced coma to preserve the time of their lives so that they can live their whole lives when they wake up and live on the new planet. However, two of the passengers in a series of events wake up and find out that they are doomed because there is still 90 years left on the journey and since nobody can put them back in the coma, are forced to live out their lives on the ship. This perspective views time as a clock as their lives are pretty much just ticking away on the ship. For my synchronous examples, I first used the example of music because firstly, it has its own time. The rhythm of the music dictates the time as a beat, and secondly, one can often lose track of time when listening to a really good song that really hits you. The other example shows an assembly line for the construction of cars which displays the "just in time" concept of manufacturing. This method doesn't construct cars with materials that are pre-purchased, but rather it get the parts that it needs when they are needed to increase efficiency and decrease waste.
