Progressivism is an ideology that focuses on how students will apply their learning outside of the classroom by primarily using the scientific method. Rather than focusing on subject-matter content, this theory believes students should be taught real-world content that is relatable to their everyday experiences. Key features of the progressive curriculum include, student centered, peer focused, growing, action centered, process and change centered, equality, and community centered. In order for these key features to work, students will go beyond the walls of the classroom by spending time learning from their community and cultural surroundings.

A specific example of how I can apply this in my own classroom is by challenging students to work on their problem-solving skills. I will have them figure out how to resolve their own problems by asking thought provoking questions. Questions such as, what are you going to do different this time? What can you learn from this minor setback? I will also have students evaluate their own progress to see if they feel like they have mastered the concept or if they feel like they need improvement.

An autobiographical narrative is a tool that helps identify a students’ sociocultural, academic, linguistic, and cognitive background. These narratives are one way to help teachers identify what instructional tools are needed to help their specific student population. These narratives should be age appropriate with parameters set on the type of information needed.

Being that I am on the elementary track, my autobiographical narrative will be very simple and easy to read. To provide an example to my students, my narrative would be an easy read. An example would look something like this: I was born in Columbia, SC. I have a large family who I love very much. I have a husband and one daughter. I speak English. I went to the University of South Carolina – Upstate. I learn better when I can see things.

The theory of multiple intelligences chooses to focus on eight different intelligences in children and adults. The intelligences are linguistics, logical-mathematics, spacial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalist in children and adults. Instead of highly regarding individuals who are gifted in logical-mathematics and linguistics, this theory values the gifts of individuals in other areas.

Because multiple intelligences suggests that teachers be able to present their lessons in a variety of ways, I believe as an elementary teacher, that will not be difficult. For instance, if I am teaching a lesson on the solar system and how Earth and the different planets orbit the moon and sun, and the different types of stars and the big dipper, I can have students apply their learning in several ways. I can have students go home every night and tell me what kind of moon was in the sky that evening, I can have them complete a solar system project or book report, and for students who are tangible learners, I can take them on a field trip to our local museum, which also has a planetarium. By incorporating different styles of learning and application, I can ensure that I am teaching at every possible angle for my students.
