Dante has awoken lost in the wilderness. After he collects himself he sees a beautiful sight. The sun has just begun shining down on a high hill. Dante believes this to be a sign from God. Dante is then cornered as three ferocious beasts approach him. The Angel Virgil appears. Virgil explains to Dante the only way he'll escape these beasts is if he journeys through the depths of Hell unscathed. Virgil will guide him, but only a reasonable distance.
