My name is Sally Walling-Brooks. I am 55 years old, divorced mother of 2. I currently am the teacher at the Juvenile Justice Center. I was a college basketball coach for most of my life. I had the same basketball coach from 7th grade to my Sophomore year in college, so needless to say he would be my mentor. But oddly enough, I don't think my coaching/leadership style was similar to his. The person who probably influenced me the most was a terrible coach I had my last 2 years in college. I learned so much about what not to do as a leader from watching her. I think teachers fulfill their role as a leader by leading by example and motivating their students to do the best they can do. Also, a great leader puts the people he or she is leading in a position to be successful. Successful teachers do that every day in their classrooms. I think the most important value of an educational leader is making decisions based on what is best for the students. To take that a bit further, I know I became a much better coach when I became a parent and it really hit me that my players were somebody's baby. So, I attempted to treat my players the way I would want someone to treat my own kids. There is so much more to being a good leader, but using that as a guiding principle is a great place to start. During this course, I would like to discover ways educational leaders can improve cultural sensitivity practices.
