The people began with political and social protest but it was met with censorship, illegal punishment, and harassment. Young students, immigrants, and unemployed citizens took to the streets. Mohammad believed that the people wanted to murder him and that it was part of a conspiracy. anti-regime protestors where not helping as several citizens had already been killed by their government. Everything began getting worse and on September 8 the regime imposed martial law and they opened fire on protestors. This caused more outrage and government workers began to go on strike leaving the country in total chaos

In January 1979 Shah and his family fled the country, and went into hiding in France. Shah left a council in charge of the country but the council proved to be a failure. The country was just in ruins and approximately one million people took the streets and the arrival of Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini who was popular with the people convinced the army to declare their neutrality and effectively ending the shah regime and gaining independence.
