Ernest Hemingway was an American Novelist and short-story writer. He was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1954. At the age of 17, Hemingway began working as a writer for a newspaper office in Kansas city. When the United States had joined the first World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. He was wounded while serving on the front, and was decorated by the Italian government. Hemingway often depicted his own experiences in his writing. During the Twenties, He became a member of a group of expatriate Americans in Paris, which he writes in his first book, The Sun Also Rises (1926). In another instance, while he was in the hospital after being wounded, he fell in love with a nurse. Her name was Agnes von Kurowsky, she had declined to marry him. A Farwell to Arms (1929), he wrote about an American lieutenant who becomes wounded while serving with the Italian ambulance service in World War I. He falls in love with an English nurse who tended to his injuries. She becomes pregnant with his child, but he returns to his post. He deserts the Italians after their Battle of Caporetto. He reunited with the nurse and they fled to Switzerland. This novel was published in 1952 and was awarded the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The story is about an old fisherman who goes on a journey to catch a giant marlin. The book was a huge success was regarded as one of Hemingway’s greatest books. It was cited when he won his Nobel Prize in 1954. A movie about the book was also made. Ernest Hemingway had married four times. His first wive was named Hadley Richardson. They met in Chicago and married in 1921, had a son named John Hemingway in 1923 and divorced in 1927. He then married Pauline Pfeiffer in that same year. She then gave birth to a boy and a girl, Patrick (1928) and  Gloria (1931) Hemingway. They then divorced in 1940. Again in that year he married Martha Gellhorn and divorced in 1945. His last wife was Mary Welsh. They married in 1946. In his late years, it was said that Hemingway was depressed and filled with anxiety. He had been hospitalized twice at the Mayo Clinic, where he had received electroconvulsive therapy.
