I watched your video first, and I was instantly like - yes! St. Lucy's definitely is a great text to start a conversation about how our education system has always tried to "reform" students that do not come from the majority culture & how it is wrong. I especially love your comments about Native Americans because in EDF 475, we studied a chapter about how the Native students were treated. It absolutely
is heartbreaking. It really made me question the intentions of Education, because even today we see a systematic degradation of cultures. I think especially in some old-school English classrooms where the push was Standard English over all at all times. But moving on from that, the education systems and the boarding schools expected Native Americans to reject their culture completely, yet in some schools the students would be forced to make "native crafts" and sell them. Yet everything else about their culture was wrong. It truly just breaks my heart. The TED talk that you chose I feel works perfectly with St. Lucy's, especially since she is talking about how she was treated during school. I think she even says, "I was the majority outside of school and the minority in it" or something to that extent. It was clear that the students and the school were not celebrating her native culture as was true in St. Lucy's. - Emily Morgan

I do not think the viewer comments have been enabled, so I'll just make a post. The TedTalk you included in this Padlet really reminded me of this poem:
https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/52210/immigrant-blues
I think that when I am a teacher, no matter what kind of demographics my school consists of, I want to do an entire unit on cultural confusion, distortion, immigration, etc. It comprises a huge part of literature and I want my students--both American from birth and immigrant students--to be made aware of this huge array of immigration literature so their mindsets can be opened.
