two million+ Hutus fled to DR Congo fearing the Tutsi government. The Hutus took over the Tutsis in DR Congo. The Hutus started fighting the Tutsis.  Over 5 million people died. The war ended in 2003, but the east of the country is still unstable. The genocide in Rwanda made Joseph's downfall speed up. It was the DR Congo's deadliest conflict in African history.

It was in 1996. Rwanda and Uganda invaded the eastern DR Congo. It was an effort to root out the remaining perpetrators of the genocide. A coalition comprised of the Ugandan and Rwandan armies
along with Congolese opposition leader Laurent Kabila. Eventually they were defeated by dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. A proxy war between Rwanda and the Kinshasa government continued in the east until the end of 2008.

Paul Kagame's rebels take power in 1998. Rwanda accused Kabila of not being against the Hutu rebels and tried to topple him. That led to five years of problems. In 2003, the war ended officially but Hutu and Tutsi militias still clash in the Eastern DR Congo. In 2008,  Tutsi's led CNDP rebels to march on Northern Kivu capital, Goma. 250,000 people fled. In 2009, Rwanda and DR Congo had a peace agreement. Former CNDP fighters formed a new rebel group called M23.
