Who wants to learn if animals deserve rights? According to Paul Waldau, “One issue for informed citizens to consider when thinking about ‘animal rights’ is, which animals deserve which protections? Animal rights approaches have always been limited as a practical matter to those animals that humans can easily notice and thus not to the vast majority of living beings” (50). It is very arguable on if animals need rights or not. Some people may think animals deserve rights, and some people think animals do not deserve rights.

Here are some negatives about animals having rights. Experimenting on animals is not always in a good manner. ProCon.org claims that animals can be operated in experiments that involve force feeding, lack of water and food, and different healing processes on wounds, and the pain of the healing process. In January 2020, most researchers' techniques involved projects related with pain (ProCon.org). Animal testing is not always helpful either. ProCon.org states that some chemicals may be unproductive on animals. For instance, aspirin can be very life threatening to some animals. Vitamin C has been effective on treating sepsis that humans have, but it does not affect mice (ProCon.org). There are also many things that affect animal rights. Paul Waldau infers that our sciences play significant roles with the human thinking about animals. Even greater importance is science has given major or minor thoughts to people about living beings (162-163). Animal rights aren't applied to all animals. ProCon.org claims that the Animal Welfare Act is not applied to fish, rats, birds, and mice which are used for ninety five percent of animals that are being researched. The AWA only applies to one million animals being researched, which leaves about twenty five million animals not under the AWA without protection (ProCon.org). Although animal testing may be helpful, it may not be the best thing to do. These are just some of the negatives of animal rights.

Here are some positives about animals having rights. Animal testing can be helpful to saving humans. ProCon.org states that animal testing is one of the major contributions to treating health conditions. Almost every medical advancement over one hundred years has resulted from the help of animal testing (ProCon.org). Humans and animals are very similar in DNA, so it is helpful to humans. ProCon.org infers that animals are suitable for research because animals and humans are very similar. Chimpanzees and mice share almost all the same DNA with humans. All mammals have commonly descended from the same ancestry (ProCon.org). Animal testing can also be helpful to saving other animals. ProCon.org addresses that some vaccines that have been tested on animals have saved the animals from certain diseases. Animal testing has saved some endangered species form extinction (ProCon.org). For animals to be safe, animal rights are crucial. Paul Waldau states that legal rights may play a significant role for animal safety. Legal rights distinctively are specific because a judge of a court and legislature create the legal rights. When the rights are created, they are given a type of description or word that enforces the idea of the legal rights (93). These are just some of the positives of animal rights.

There are many negatives of animals having rights, but there are also many positives of animals having rights. Some people may think animals deserve rights, and some people think animals do not deserve rights. Knowing about animal rights can actually be very important for the safety of animals and even humans. Hopefully everyone learns about animal rights so both humans and animals can be as safe as possible.
