The only type of sand that's safe for both chicks and adult chickens is construction grade sand, also sometimes called river sand. It's heavier and doesn't give off as much dust.

Research has shown(3) that without question, chicks raised on sand have a far lower chance of bacterial disease. Sand doesn't retain wet poop in the same way as other bedding materials - it dries and dessicates it. Bacteria therefore has a far lower chance of multiplying; counts of E.coli in particular were found to be lower in sand bedding.

Additionally, chicks in a sand-based brooder have fewer problems with their feet. The sand acts as a kind of natural emery paper and keeps feet and nails healthy.

Even very young chicks will want to dust bathe, particularly if you're hatching when the weather's hot. Sand is the ideal medium for them - as you'll see from this short video of some of my 5 day old chicks at "Brooder Beach"!

Cons:

Sand can't be composted. Put it on the compost heap and you'll still find it there years later. It does, though, make a great addition to clay soil which is what we do with ours. Add to your veggie patch and the sand will ensure better drainage while the poop it contains adds much needed nitrogen. Perfect!

Wet sand can take days to dry out, which is clearly a problem for chicks. Make sure the sand you buy is well and truly dry before adding it to your brooder.

Sand does compact easily and forms a very hard surface. How to avoid? Simple - clean it out each day using a kitty-lit scooper and use the scooper to loosen any compacted sand.

Sand under a heat lamp can become very hot - think of the beach on a sunny day. The answer? Use a radiant heat source such as Brinsea's EcoGlow. See my review of Brinsea's small and larger brooder lamps.

https://www.raising-happy-chickens.com/bedding-in-the-brooder.html

I also put it in the incubator at lock-down to make sure that when chicks hatch and start bumbling about, as chicks do, they don't slip in there, either. It's inexpensive, it's available in nice bright colours if you like your brooder to look good, and it does a great job -sophia

SELECTING A HEAT LAMP

Using a heat lamp, preferably one that emits 250-watt infrared heat, is your best bet for keeping chicks happily toasty. While screw-in ceramic heaters are also effective, ordinary incandescent bulbs, electric heat pads and hot-water radiators are not recommended because they don’t provide reliable heat at an optimum temperature and run the risk of overheating your chicks.

Purchase a red-tinted bulb instead of a clear or white bulb if you can — red light is less stressful to chicks than white light, and chicks exposed to light/dark cycles sleep better, are calmer and are less likely to peck feathers. Some people use two smaller-wattage lamps instead of one high-wattage lamp so that the chicks will still have heat if one of the bulbs burns out in the middle of the night.

-Tyler

Best way to heat your chicks. It has adjustable legs to move. And a cover so they don’t get burned. But it is sold separately we should get a 12 by 12 that will hold 20 chicks so they will have some extra room. We might need two brooders so it does not take up the whole space of the brooder..

Here are food that chicks can eat:

Protein: After hatching, a chick’s diet should include approximately 18% to 20% protein. Protein builds chicks’ muscles, promoting strength and bone integrity during their crucial developmental stages. As chicks reach 19 weeks old, gradually taper their protein intake to about 16% of their diet.

Vitamins: All poultry require fat- and water-soluble vitamins. Specifically, they require all vitamins except vitamin C, including vitamin A, D, E and K, niacin, folic acid, biotin, thiamine and riboflavin.

Minerals: Minerals are equally important. Baby chicks require a diet with calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and copper, among others.

Grains: Most chicken feeds incorporate healthy grains, like corn, wheat and soybean meal. These grains act as sources of vitamins, oil and protein, which all poultry require for energy.

Fats: Most of a chicken’s fat content comes from oils that contain linoleic acid, an important fatty acid. Fatty acids break down vitamins and minerals, allowing chickens to receive all of their benefits.

Baby chicks’ feed should provide at least 90% of their nutrition, with the remaining 10% from their pasture.

On top of their feed, poultry require a constant source of water. Chickens drink almost three times their weight in water. A good water-to-chicken ratio is one quart per four chickens.
https://organicfeeds.com/types-of-food-baby-chicks-can-and-cannot-eat/
