Throughout the text between the two battles there are numerous accounts of Literary terms such as kenning, caesura and Alliteration. These terms allow for the reader to gain a greater perspective of the Anglo Saxon culture.
The Battle with Grendel
Kenning
-"The infamous killer fought for his freedom"(pg.31 321-322)-Soldier
-"That mighty protector of men"(pg.32 350)-Soldier
-"He carried the terrible trophy by the hair"(pg.38 575-576)-Onlookers/Soldier
Symbolism
-"Where Beowulf had hung it, was the monsters arm"This depicts the monsters arm as trophy something that the Danes have been waiting for for over a century.(pg.33 393-395)
Foreshadowing
-"Grendel to gnaw the broken bones of his last human supper"(pg.31 395-397)

All of these different literary element are extremely important to the over all meaning of the story along with the development of the very obscure character. The elements also allow for the reader to analyze the text better to gain a larger understanding of the writing from the time period.

The Battle with Grendel:

In this section of Beowulf, Grendel comes to attack the mead hall. He comes in and destroys the door, as seen by the quote, "Straight to the door, then snapped it open, Tore its iron fasteners with a touch And rushed angrily over the threshold." (Raffel 30, 280-282). Grendel then enters, becomes delighted with all his potential food, eats a man, and then goes to Beowulf. When he is about to kill, Beowulf grabs Grendel's hands and he can't move. Hunger turns to fear in the quote, "Knew at once that nowhere on earth Had he met a man whose hands were harder; His mind flooded with fear..."(Raffel 310-312) He and Beowulf then have an epic unarmed battle and it leaves Grendel... unarmed. Beowulf's men try to help but are useless because Grendel is weapon proof due to a spell. Grendel then flees and dies in the marsh he came from. In the morning the people come and see evidence of the fight. They celebrate and praise Beowulf.

The Battle with Grendel's Mother

Grendel's Mother becomes furious and goes ashore. She kills Hrothgar's closest friend and steals Grendel's arm back. Beowulf learns this and swims down to the bottom of the lake to kill the mother. She greets him by snatching him and trying to harm him. None of it gets past his armor. Then a slue of other sea beasts also attack him, but he is still unharmed. Grendel's mother drags him into an underwater battle hall and their fight begins. He starts with his sword, but learns it's useless as seen by the quote, " But her guest/ Discovered could no sword could slice her evil/ Skin..."(Raffel 451-452). She overpowers him and stabs him in the chest with a dagger, but his armor saved him. He then uses her own sword against her, kills her, goes to Grendel's body, and takes his head. The people see all the blood in the lake and think that Beowulf died. Most the people leave and Beowulf's warriors stay behind. He resurfaces with Grendel's head and the dissolved sword. Four men moved the head to the palace and Beowulf personall took it to the king, as seen with the quote, "...; he sought Hrothgar/ to salute him and show him Grendel's head./ He carried that terrible trophy by the hair, /Brought it straight to where the Danes sat."(Raffel 574-576)

-Steven Nixon
