The evidence shows that Malaya would gain 40% of Singapore's economy, which would greatly increase Malaya's rate of income. 

Malaya also wanted to merge with Singapore as it would give Malaya territorial land, giving Malaya a larger influence.

The evidence is "Malaya through the merger as stood to gain its territorial land as Sabah and Sarawak would be included under the territory of Malaysia, thus they would be able to control a larger land mass and have a wider influence."

Another reason why Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya is because Singapore would be able to boost their economy through a common market.
