The Puritans believed that witch's float in water and normal people sink. This was tragic because the person who is being tried will either die due to drowning or be publicly detested if they are found guilty (witch). The woman in this photo is tied to a chair and they are testing to see if she is going to float or sink so she is essentially in a lose lose scenario. They moved and migrated from Europe initially because they didn't like the king and how he divorced several of his wives. They were kicked out of the other places they moved to after England. Puritans built colleges for example Harvard because education was important to the Puritans. In the photo, Jon Winthrop leaded the creation of the City upon the Hill because he believed in honoring God. They taught that grace was a free gift of salvation and that people get to go to heaven if god gifts them grace.
