1. Gerta was taught that “our strength came from the collective . . . Individuality was a weakness, a sickness of the west.” Do you agree with this statement? Use examples from A Night Divided to backup your argument.

2. Fear was a constant presence in all of the characters’ lives. How did fear shape the actions of the individuals in this story? Explain what the actions were and how fear influenced their decisions.

Lucy - 1. I agree and disagree with that because you can have power with a large group of people and a small group or even one person can have more power impact. 2. Well fear has changed the way their Mama has thought it has changed her mindset and she has given up on getting to the other side.

1. I disagree and agree because you don't have to be in a group to have strength. But there is nothing wrong with being in a group or being independent. Gerta started the tunnel by herself but then Fritz came in and did it with her. 2. Fear influenced Gerta's decision of starting to dig the tunnel because Gerta knew that she might get hurt or even die by digging the tunnel but she knew that there is no other way to get across and that someone has to do it successfully and she thought everyone is scared of everything in this town so I should face my fears and try to do it because it is worth it.

#1 I agree and disagree with the statement because, I do believe that if you work as a group or with a partner things are easier and can go much faster. For example, Gerta and Fritz make up much more time by working together in the tunnel, compared to if Fritz was working alone, he probably would have only done half as much work as he has now. I also disagree with this statement because Greta and Fritz's father made a difference by himself by doing a dance on the tower while Gerta was walking by. If he wouldn't have done that Gerta and Fritz wouldn't have started tunneling and would not be on there way to the west to have a better life. #2 Fear shaped many charcters in the story. Three of the charecters who were shaped by fear are Anna, Her Kruse, and Peter. Anna's actions were to abandon Gerta and to start being mean to her. Fear affected this because Gerta kept going to the wall. Anna did not even want to be near the wall none the less getting involved with watch guards guarding the wall. Her Kruse was affected because he wrote done what he was feeling got aressted for it and then was scared to death. Peter was affected by being so afraid that he tried to flee to the west and was killed for trying to do so.

      1. I disagree with statement 1 because, individuality means that you are diffrent from every one else but they are saying it is a bad thing. If every one was the same and thought the same way then were would we be now so many things would not be a thing if people Just all had the same opinion. like in A NIGHT DIVIDED if Greta gave up when her brother told her that it wouldn't work she used her individuality to get her brother to work with her.
2. Fear has changed the Mama by she changed her mind she was to scared of what would happen if she stayed and it convinced her to go with the rest of her family to the west. fear has also changed Greta and Fritz because they used to be lazy and not mind full of who was around them but the fear made it so they worked harder and were more careful of their surrondings
