I would love to use this activity with my class, I felt it was a great activity for listening and noticing your usual tendencies that you revert to when in conversation. I also appreciated the raw nature of the activity in which you could discuss more sensitive topics and opinions without judgement. I noticed that for some questions I needed a minute to gather my thoughts and I think as educators this is useful to remember that students also need that wait time and that thinking about an answer does not know that they don't have one.

At the start it was a bit artificial following set questions but as we chatted it became easier and more fluid. Having the questions took us to places we would probably never have discussed or shared through 'normal' interactions so this made for very meaningful conversation. I think the questions took us deeper, quicker, and forced us to think back to experiences that may have formed us. Although the instruction was to 'just listen' we did interact, ask clarifying questions and respond to each other and I think this deepened the conversation. It was good having a range of questions so that we had something easy to get going and then more and more challenging questions.

The activity seemed like one that has the potential to create space for authentic sharing and dialogue because the interviewer isn't allowed to respond. This I imagine would need some scaffolding as it is difficult to restrain verbal responses, and body language still communicates a lot about the listeners perspective. I see a lot of opportunities to discuss challenging topics in any subject. As a science teacher I think about ethical debates, or other controversial science topics, but I also think about discussing thinking and components of core competencies.

I enjoy the part that the interviewer cannot respond to the questions, it allows the interviewee to complete a thought on their own. I can see this as a useful reflection piece in our advisory program as students/teachers work to get to know each other better.

This could be a great way to practice listening skills. It is hard to ask questions and not ask follow-up questions or interject with your own comments.
