This changed the direction of the Vietnam War. This battle changed the battle of the Vietnam war. During the Lunar New Year celebrations, when firing was usually halted for both sides, the Vietcong infiltrated cities all over the country. They struck the Saigon International Airport, the presidential palace and US embassy in Saigon. US and South Viet forces repulsed them and caused huge losses. The Vietcong were broken for the rest of the war. Althought this battle was won, the citizens of America were discouraged by this and opposed Johnson's reelection. The news coverage of this battle turned the public against the war and anyone affiliated with it.

At the war's height, the US was caught in a global issue. The US needed to focus on handling the war back to Vietnam and begin retrieving US troops back home. Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird described a policy of "Vietnamization" when discussing a diminishing role for the US military in Vietnam. The objective of the policy was to shift the burden of defeating the Communists onto the South Vietnamese Army and away from the United States. Nixon had no way to avoid the national conflicts about the war. Troops would return to their homeland rejected, critisized, and unhonored by the people.

After a series of delays, the first bombing raids of Rolling Thunder are flown. It was the second of March. THE US, AND rep. vietnam air force executed this operation for three and a half years. In which hundreds of thousands of tons of American bombs were dropped. President Johnson approved of this on the 13th of Feb., that year to force the communit Northern government to stop supporting the Vietcong. By destroying N.Viet. infustructure, the nation hoped N. Viet would stop suppling the south and the people would be unmotivated by the war cause. At the same time, it would boost the Southern Government. Despite this, The USSR and China helped the North develope antiaircraft systems to bring down nearly 900 American planes. The Vietcong also attacked American bases in the South of Vietnam. As a result, Johnson sent more ground troops. The cost stooped over 300million dollars and lost aircraft was worth over 900million. This battle is considered unsuccessful since the South were supplied enough to cause the Tet-Offensive event.

Nixon stated in his resignation speech he states, "I was never a quitter, to leave office before my term completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body, But as president, I must put the interests of America first". Vice president Ford was sworn into president the very next day, after the world watched Nixon and his first family leave for California by helicopter.

In November of 1963 Ngo Dinh Diem was killed during a US supported and funded coup by dissident generals of the South Vietnamese army. At 3:30 am, of November second, generals asulted the main palace with tanks. This led to the assassination. Diem and his brother left the passage to a Chinese merchants house. Int the morning, they went into a roman Catholic Chinese Church. When they came out, there was an armored car with men that pushed them into the car and killed them. At this time, the US lost confidence in Diem and believed he would not be able to unite Vietnam. Diem once stated, " I am an anticommunist from the point of view of doctrine. I am not an anticommunist from the point of view of politics or humnity." He though of his communist neighbors as family who are finding their way. He emphasized he wanted to have peaceful relationships.

Leading into his presidency, John F. Kennedy would carry out the ideas of Dwight Eisenhower and the involvement of Vietnam War. Kennedy also supported the Domino Theory, which stated that if South Vietnam became communist, other nations would follow communism. As president during the war, Kennedy was conflicted with decisions because of the monumenting impact on soldiers as well as the idea that they may be fighting in a war, that could lead America into a bottomless military and political pit. He decided to increase finance for the South Vietnam army, to provide for their efforts. Kennedy also implemented the idea of strategic hamlets in order to provide security for Vietnam locals. Sadly, this negatively effected the war and angered the peasants. They did not want to leave their homes for secure compounds. As a result, many chose to support communism.

We must recognize his significance and that John F. Kennedybelieved in the containment of communism. He consented to the wisdom of others including general Maxwell D. Tailor.
