When Michael was faced with his own insecurities as he explained to his mother that he's "just tired of everyone picking on me all the time for no reason except they think they can. I'm tired of knowing I could stop them and I don't. You know who I hate more than them for picking on me? I hate myself for letting them. I'm tired of being a nobody." (Evans 30). Michael has been constantly getting bullied at school, due to his tourettes syndrome. (This is a disease that Michael has. It makes him blink and twitch uncontrollably in stressful situations.) The reason he has it it's because of his electrical power that he needs to hide so people won't find out. However, there is time when Michael feels like he should use it to simply defend himself, but by using his power, he will no longer be able to hide his identity. His mother told him that “As you grow older, Michael, you’ll learn an important lesson—that most people spend their entire lives wishing for a second chance to do what they should have done right the first time.” (Evan 31) meaning that if he does ends up exposing himself consequences could happen and he (Michael) may regret.

Corporate Corruption

The main issue stated in the novel is corporate corruption. Corporate corruption is defined as , the “abuse of power or private office for personal gain" (Google). By this simple definition, The Elgen was definitely taking part of corporate corruption. Dr. Hatch (full name is Charles James Hatch) was the former multi-millionaire CEO of the Elgen Corporation and main antagonist of the Michael Vey series. He and his Glows overtook the island nation of Tuvalu. He deposed as CEO and became the unsanctioned President of Tuvalu (renamed Hatch Islands).Dr. Hatch, the head of operations at the Elgen, uses his position of power in order to help him achieve omnipotence within the OASIS. His plan is simple; he wishes to find all the electrics kids and make his own society and with the advance technology find out how to make more special kids and eventually take over the world. If his company benefits, as the head of operations, he also benefits himself. This evidently follows the above definition. This is closely tied with a major issue in our society today: ISIS. "ISIS aims to create an Islamic state called a caliphate across Iraq, Syria and beyond. The group is implementing Sharia Law, rooted in eighth-century Islam, to establish a society that mirrors the region's ancient past.

ISIS is known for killing dozens of people at a time and carrying out public executions, crucifixions and other acts." (CNN) This is definitely a clear example of corporate corruption. This group are abusing their powers in order to benefit themselves greatly. Like Elgen in Michael Vey, the Elgen believes what they're doing is for the best and won't harm the world.
