My school district is small rural about 70 graduates/year/50%+ free and reduced lunch rate. We are on the focus list for the state, in most part, based on test scores.

The trends have changed so many times. Each new trend seeking to do better than the previous. All the while the "whole" child is dismissed. Arts, PE, clubs etc are the thing that keep interest in many children and keep them coming to school but the testing is so stressful for our students and I feel for them.

I have a six year old and in KDg she had homework. I am all for reinforcement but back in my time in elementary school, there was more down time (for activities) than there is now. How can we be taking children's needs into consideration when we ignore many of the growth patterns of childhood?

It truly is amazing the changes that kids go through in 10 years. Judging from the info one thread that runs through all ages is the need for consistency, organization and concise directions and modeling.
Also, depending on the age, students enjoy group work or work with one other person and mostly of the same sex.
I think that appropriate humor is important for the class to have a more relaxing atmosphere to reduce stress and anxiety for students.
Obviously the young elementary classrooms need to be more rigid with organization. ( I'm glad I don't teach k-5)
I know from my son that at 12 kids really are focused on helping teachers/peers and have a great interest to make $$. The ages of 12-14 show the most issues with peers fitting in, being a part of something big, peer pressure are more prevalent. For the ages I teach, this can impact the organization of the classroom, grouping, presentations. It is important to me to read the vibe of my 6th and 8th graders each day to see if there are issues that need to be discussed. For the 8th grade, I have them right after lunch so if there was drama at lunch it spills over into my class. This issue will need to be taken care of before learning can occur.
