Like so many other young adults, I found myself spending countless hours each day, scrolling through Instagram/Facebook or watching stories on Snapchat. I did not even realize just how much time I was spending on it, until I took a look at my screen time statistics my phone provided. This was a bit of a rude awakening for me, as I thought to myself, what am I really learning from this? Am I doing anything besides watching fluff videos that have no true value to my life?

A study found that 89% of undergraduate students experience phantom vibrations. This is the perception of vibrations from a mobile device that isn’t vibrating. People crave receiving notifications so much that they start imagining them.

Mental health issues have gone up steadily following the trendlines from smartphone and social network releases.

Once I realized how much time I spent on social media, I needed to take a bit of time away for my own emotional health. I realized I had spent so much time comparing my own life to the highlights of the lives of others. This can cause negative mental health impacts and actually made me a less social person. I ended up deleting Snapchat altogether, and spend about half as much time on Instagram now.

I realized that social media could be used for positive change. Social media can be used as a means to generate political change or participate politically. Social media in and of itself can be used to generate awareness of events which young adults may otherwise not have been aware of. I choose now to meaningfully engage with social media in a way that makes a difference in socio-political activities or advances my own well-being/knowledge as an educator.
