What I mean by military advantage it gave them a easier and better route that reaches the Pacific Ocean, instead of going all the south they can just cut across using the canal. Using that route naval trade could be faster from Florida to west coast and the naval military could rotate to the Pacific faster. President  Theodore Roosevelt supported  the independence of Panamanian independence with Canal in his mind and finally on Nov.18th, 1903 the US signed a treaty which gave the US rights to the Panama Canal Zone. (Person C - Abraham) https://padlet.com/BradyB02/rky29osbcgp7/wish/294951209 I think it is more Realism because the reason behind taking control in this area was because the US wanted to gain control over the Panama Canal which gave them a better trade route and naval military advantage. So when the panamanian want to gain independence, Teddy Roosevelt supported their independence with the Canal in mind. I think it also some Idealism because the US (especially TR) wanted and even supported the panamanian independence.
