Purple Hibiscus explores many of the other themes - religious extremism, violence, control etc - within the family. The contrasting dynamics between Kambili's oppressive home and her aunt Ifeoma's more open and tolerant household highlight diverse family structures.

Kambili is initially silenced by fear and dominated by her father's strict religious rules, but she finds empowerment through her exposure to different perspectives, particularly in her aunt Ifeoma's household. Her growing courage is evident as she begins to question authority, challenge traditions, and ultimately assert her own voice. Kambili's journey symbolises the empowering process of breaking free from constraints, embracing individual agency, and finding the courage for self-expression.
