Definition/Explanation:
The Platt Amendment was an amendment that gave the US the right to take over Cuba if it was entering treaties that would jeopardize their freedom or put them into debt. It enforced sanitary reform on the island of Cuba and allowed for America to build a naval base on the island.

Significance- Why is this important?
This is important because it was an attempt to protect Cuba from International affairs.
1904: Panama Canal

How was the land acquired?
Roosevelt quickly recognized the hastily created Republic of Panama, and a treaty was negotiated giving the U.S. the right to build the Panama Canal.

Why was the land Important to the US? What piqued their interest?
U.S. officials had long sought to build a canal through Central America so that ships could travel from ocean to ocean without having to go all the way around South America. The Panama canal would cut this distance by more than half. It would greatly help trade both in the United States and abroad. Also, the American Navy would be able to move war ships between the two oceans (Atlantic and Pacific) much quicker. The U.S. would also be able to access and protect its new territories much more efficiently.

What is the outcome of the land today?
This shortcut reduced shipping costs, helped to increase trade, the Navy could now move ships more freely between the Atlantic (East Coast) and Pacific (West Coast) of the United States, and it guaranteed a strong U.S. presence in Latin America, where the U.S. had valuable new property to protect. The canal is now owned by Panama.
