In the rising action of The House of the Scorpion, Matt is returned back home from after being locked up in a cell and hidden from anybody by Rosa. He is given a body guard by El Parton, the man who cloned Matt from himself. El Parton is the ruler of Opium and therefore he has a lot of power. He is also 140 years old and is often described as 'the old vampire' or 'mummy.' He is attracted to peole he can manipulate, like Tam Lin. Matt and his body guard grow close, and so do Matt and his new friend Maria. Maria doesn't care that Matt is a clone and Tam Lin his bodyguard doesn't either. Matt is determined to prove that even though he is a clone, he is still human but he's having troubles doing so. Matt and Maria get themselves in a situation where Matt has to know why clones are made. Celia and Tam Lin have to explain that people make clones of themselves so they can 'harvest' their clones' organs to live longer.

In the exposition of The House of the Scorpion, Nancy Farmer introduced characters such as Matt, Celia, Tom, and Maria. It explained that people in Matt's time don't like clones. The story is taking place in the future, in a country called Opium, which was once Mexico. It is really messed up there. Matt is a clone, so he has to be kept hidden by Celia, his caregiver who loves him very much. One day Matt jumps on top of a broken window because he wants to go outside and play with other kids. He gets hurt and has to be taken to the doctor. There he realizes that being a clone is 'a bad thing' and he meets some bad people (Rosa, Tom, and Willium). They are bad people because they are cruel to Matt (Tom is cruel to everybody though).

Once Matt crosses the border, he finds the Lost Boys who spend their lives harvesting plankton. They are ordered around by Keepers and Matt realizes that this place isn't much better than Opium, even though nobody knows that Matt is a clone and they treat him like a regular person. All of the Lost Boys are orphans and are forced to work hard every day. The Keepers preach fairness and equality but they really aren't that fair. After several months of living with the Lost Boys, they decide that they must escape the plankton factory. A Keeper tries to kill one of the Lost Boys but they now understand that they outnumber the Keepers. All the Lost Boys attack back, but they fail to harm the Keepers. The Keepers don't want the boys to win the fight, but they don't want the rebel Lost Boys to keep stay with them anymore so they leave them in the middle of the desert to fend for themselves. They run into many obsticles but with Matt leading the way, the Lost Boys return to Opium.

Because Matt was gone so long, El Parton wasn't able to survive. Since Matt is El Parton's clone, Matt is technically the new ruler of Opium. And since Matt is a clone and also the ruler of Opium, people are starting to come to their senses and realize that what they have been doing with clones is gross. Matt's story spreads and Matt and other clones gain more and more support. Matt has friends is accepted at last. He feels great and powerful.

Climax

I'm pretty sure that the climax begins at Steven and Emilia's(Maria's sister) wedding. During the wedding, El Parton has a heart attack and is close to dying so he needs a new heart..that means that Matt will have to give his heart(and life) to El Parton. This is normal to the people of Opium because El Parton is their leader and he doesn't care what people do to their clones. Most people really don't care what happens to Matt, so he gets captured and taken to the doctors. There they 'prepare him for harvesting.' Just when they are ready to put him to sleep, Tam Lin rescues him and tells him to run away. Matt does, and he soon crosses the border.

The conflict is that Matt can't get people to accept that clones are humans too and they have emotions and feelings like every body else. Throughout the book Matt just tries to be treated like a regular kid, but nobody will because he's a clone. Matt can't make regular friends easily, get food easily, and find an education easily. Matt also doesn't want to be harvested by El Parton either because who would want their life to end just because a bad person that is 10 times older than you needs your heart in order to live longer and 'harvest' more innocent kids and raise a country to have disgusting beliefs?

The setting in this story is a country named Opium, which is described to be where Arizona is now. Opium is ruled by El Parton. He supports people raising clones to harvest their organs and planting computer chips in peoples' brains so you can have complete control over them. He uses these eejits to harvest narcotic from the many poppy fields that make up Opium. Opium is bordered by the United states and Atzlan. Atlzan is what used to be Mexico. The technology is much more advanced here, but Keepers rule the land and their rules aren't very fair.
