Mommers is the antagonist towards the conflict of Addie versus what Addie wants. Addie is too afraid to speak up about her wants and desires because she doesn't want to hurt Mommers. Addie takes life with her mother like walking on a minefield. Mommers is what Addie calls an "all or nothing" kind of person. In the book you see that Mommers also leaves Addie home alone for longer periods of time.

I really enjoyed reading Waiting for Normal by Leslie Connor, it is a moving story about a 12 year old girl, Addie, going through the difficulties of everyday life while dealing with even more issues at home. It made me feel angry, it made me feel sad, but most of all if made me feel something, and I think a good book is a book that makes you feel something for the characters and with the characters. The characters were people I think you could find in just about every city or town, they weren't 2D people that felt like they were put in the story just for dialogue, these characters belonged here and were meant to be here. Each of these characters contributed to who Addie was and who she became. Each and every character was put into this story with a purpose, they each contributed to the development of Addie. All these characters had real-life personalities and they all made me feel something for and about them. Throughout the story you see how Addie connects with these characters and how they react with her. Waiting for Normal is an amazing book with a beautiful story line and wonderfully thought-out characters that are easy to fall in love with, and if I had to give it a score out of 10 I would give it a 9.5/10.

Leadership

Addie is a leader because she was able to make people listen. Through her kind-nature and humbleness. She care deeply about those around her. In the beginning of the book, on page 46, Addie says to Robert and Soula, "a hero is someone who sets themselves apart from others. You know---someone who is strong or shows courage...". She elaborates on the idea by saying "...it's possible...that every person is a hero to someone else?" This idea is carried throughout the story until Addie is taken away from her home after a fire and she writes "HERO" on the foggy window to Soula. Also until the very end of the book when Soula passes away due to cancer and writes to Addie, "I'm glad to have been one of your heroes..."

The theme of Waiting for Normal is, "Good things always come to those who wait". Throughout the book Addie wanted a "normal" life. She wanted to be with her sisters and stepfather Dwight because she did not see her life with her mother as normal. When she finds out that Dwight has a new girlfriend, Hannah, she is surprised but when she sees them she wants to live like that. To her, what her sisters have is normal. In the second to last chapter we find out Dwight adopted Addie after her longing for that to happen to her. This shows that after Addie had waited after wanting that for a long amount of time, she finally got what she wanted without acting impulsively and risking her chances of getting what she wanted.
