Building my self esteem is one of the most important tips for working towards a goal of becoming an elementary school teacher. I need to work on being more kind to myself, allowing myself to be more carefree, patting myself on the back, respecting myself and acknowledging the challenges that will occur during these steps towards my goal (D'Souza, 2011). Changing what I thing day to day and keeping a positive mindset will help me to achieve all of my goals, including continuing in post education for a master's degree. I also need to stop stressing and just enjoy the joys of life everyday. My five year professional plan includes obtaining a master's degree in an educational related subject such as special education or speech therapy. I plan on focusing on my goals and achieving them. Just as like building self esteem, I must keep a positive mindset and stay focused on my goals. D'Souza suggests that if you are not sure about your goals and dreams, then to make a list of some things you would like to accomplish (D'Souza, 2011). My list includes graduating with my BA in education, passing the state licensure test and taking an alternative route to licensure in order to become a licensed elementary school teacher in my county. I have to remember to take it slow and not lose faith when things do not turn out as plan. Creating my own opportunities includes many baby steps. I must set realistic goals with strict timelines. I am already in the process of completing one goal with my upcoming graduation from ASU in May 2022. I am already networking and making connections with academic advisors for masters programs and working towards passing the licensure test for becoming a teacher in my local school district. D'Souza also suggests to believe in yourself and take initiative (D'Souza, 2011).  I do believe in myself and I am taking initiative with planning my next steps towards becoming an elementary teacher. I also need to be prepared and be open to possibilities. The possibilities that come with a BA in education are endless. I feel that I am always planning and investing in my future career goals. I have met with many educational leaders recently to understand the planning they had made for their own professional progress. Making this vision board is just one of the many ways in which I have invested in my own career planning. My desire to change must outweigh the "cost of change" as discussed by Granville D'Souza (D'Souza, 2011). The road to change so far has been quite challenging for me. I work full time, attend school full time all while trying to be the best wife and best parent to my seven-year-old autistic son. Change is not easy and a lot of people struggle with change. I honestly have meltdowns every school semester. But I pick myself up and realize that my vision of the future greatly outweighs my fear of change. The practical steps I need to make a change are already being made. Loss is something that we all face in our path to success. We may lose a job, lose confidence, and lose hope. D'Souza states, "The bigger the perceived loss, the more we can stay motivated to staunch the loss" (D'Souza, 2011, p. 218). In reading about loss aversion, I found that we rarely take risks for fear of change. I am currently facing loss aversion with my career path to becoming an elementary school teacher. I often wonder if I should stay with my current job as a lead preschool teacher in a head start program, or apply to become a center director with my current employer instead of taking the leap to elementary education. I fear the risks I must take to make my dream a reality. But I know I have options. If working for my local school district is not a good fit, then I can apply to work for a charter or private school. I need to remember to have fun in the process of achieving my goals. I need to go on dates with my husband, play board games with my son and keep some quiet time for myself to read or craft. It is important that we focus on our own well-being when we are planning out future. Becoming an elementary teacher takes hard work and dedication. I must stop and smell the roses as they say.
