We wanted to get an allergy form sent to the actors as a standard safety measure, as we will be using makeup and we wanted to check if we had to make adjustments to the makeup style due to any sensitive skin or allergies the actors may have.

We wanted her appearance to be naturally pretty but tired-looking, with minimal effort put into her hair and makeup. This understated look hints at her internal struggles and mental exhaustion, subtly conveying her battle with mental illness.

Lena’s hair change inspiration

We decided to change Lena’s hair for continuity purposes. As Izzy’s hair is long, we thought it would be difficult to recreate the same bun for all the different shots we will be doing. We change it to a braid to still show the low maintenance vibe we are going for with her character at the beginning.

We want to have Marla’s hair and makeup to reflect her polished yet put-together personality. Her hair is styled in a bouncy blow-dry, suggesting that she takes the time to maintain her appearance and likely gets her hair done often. Her makeup is kept natural and glowy, with a dewy finish that enhances her features without looking overdone. This effortless yet polished look suggests that Marla values appearances and wants to present herself as someone who is always in control, even if there may be more going on beneath the surface.

We wanted Jasmine’s hair and makeup to distract people from anything else, reflected through her bold fashion choices. The glitter and gem accents in her makeup mirror her ability to turn life’s awkward moments into something positive, just as she transforms embarrassment into a key part of her identity. The sparkle in her makeup reinforces this idea, adding an extra layer of brightness to her look, symbolizing how she tries to find light and humor even in challenging situations. For a lot of Jasmine's character we took inspiration from Euphoria. It is very bold glamour with bright colours, gems and accessories and that is the vibe we wanted to show through her makeup and hair style.

We had a time slot to access the costume cupboard, and during that time, we found several great pieces that captured Jasmine’s vibe. We focused on bright, cheerful colours and slightly mismatched elements that reflect her optimistic and slightly self-conscious personality. The pieces we chose felt authentic to her — playful yet grounded, a little imperfect but full of warmth, just like Jasmine herself. We wanted her clothing to show how she always tries to see the brighter side, even when things go wrong. These choices help bring out her individuality and make her feel approachable and real to the audience.

We found these pieces in the costume cupboard, and they were perfect for Walter — exactly what we were looking for. We were aiming for an all-black, minimalistic style that reflects his sarcastic, emotionally guarded personality, and the pieces we found captured that effortlessly. The simplicity and dark tones match Walter’s need to blend in and avoid drawing attention to himself. They also reflect his 'no risks, no surprises' attitude, which ties directly into his backstory.

Max’s slicked-back hair and no-makeup makeup look were chosen to further emphasize her guarded and controlled nature. Her slicked-back hair is sleek, polished, and free of distractions, reflecting her desire for order and control in her life. This hairstyle creates a sharp exterior that mirrors the emotional walls she builds to protect herself. Similarly, her no-makeup makeup look enhances her natural features without drawing attention, allowing her to maintain an understated and composed appearance. Just like her layered clothing, masks, and gloves that create physical and emotional distance, her minimalist hair and makeup reinforce her need to stay guarded and in control, keeping her emotions carefully hidden from the world.

We chose Walter’s hair and makeup to complement his all-black wardrobe, reinforcing the idea that he is trying to protect himself from the world. His pale skin, which makes him appear almost ghostly, reflects his desire to fade into the background and avoid drawing attention, choosing invisibility as a form of emotional armor. This combination of his appearance and clothing highlights his attempt to create a protective shell, keeping the world at a distance to avoid being hurt again and the slicked back hair will fit the alternative dark aesthetic.

Elliot's hair and makeup inspiration

Elliot will have a buzzcut. A buzzcut would give him a literal blank canvas—much like his casual outfits. Just as he uses stickers to add bursts of color and creativity to his clothes, a buzzcut could give him a playful new way to express himself, turning something as simple as his hairstyle into another outlet for his imagination. The buzzcut’s simplicity would also align with his laid-back, low-maintenance style, while offering him yet another opportunity to make the ordinary feel a little more fun and unique.

For the first day, we went for the two braids and a tired makeup look which I am happy with looking back on the footage, and I think this look was perfect for this scene.

For Maxine’s final look, we initially used a piece of cloth as a face covering to reflect her guarded, introverted personality. However, later that evening, we received feedback via email suggesting that the styling choice could be perceived as culturally insensitive and potentially discriminatory. As a team, we took this concern very seriously, as it was never our intention to cause offence or misrepresent any group. In response, we promptly revised the look, replacing the cloth with a loosely draped scarf worn over her head, and added glasses to further convey her desire to emotionally and physically shield herself. This change maintained the character’s essence while being more mindful and respectful of wider cultural sensitivities.

This is what we had to work with when coming up with the character's costume, hair and makeup ideas. Rachel, Abbie and I sat down and went through each character and drew images and wrote a list on what we wanted for each character. We then confirmed with Remy and Lucy if our ideas were what they were looking for. They confirmed out ideas, which then helped us progress and book a look around the costume department on campus.

The day before filming, we met as a group and went through and discussed what ideas each department had and if we were all on the same page on our ideas.

Although hair and makeup are essential to the overall look of the production, our responsibilities were completed relatively quickly compared to other roles. To support the rest of the team, we stepped in as runners and assisted the director by sourcing equipment and props, such as dandelions. By helping with smaller yet necessary tasks, we eased the workload for others and contributed to keeping the shoot running smoothly and efficiently.

As Jasmine had the most vibrant and major makeup, we spent a lot of time figuring out what look we wanted to go for. This was the final look we chose. We chose this because it matched her eccentric clothing and also was in the theme of euphoria, which was the inspiration for this look.

We went around the costume department looking for pieces that fit each character. We booked a time slot when we would be available to look around. By doing this, we got more inspiration for each character, as we seen what clothing was available to us.

With the information on sizes and allergies, we gathered from the Google Forms, we compiled the information into a table so we can access it easily during fitting and makeup trials, and so that it is more palatable for the directors and producers and more easily used for any risk assessments.

Overall, filming The Goldfish was a valuable and memorable experience that allowed me to develop my skills in a creative, collaborative environment. As part of the hair and makeup team, I gained a much deeper understanding of how visual styling contributes to character development and storytelling. Each character in The Goldfish had their unique personality, and our job was to reflect that visually through subtle yet effective choices in their hair and makeup. It was rewarding to see how even small details, like colour choices, styling, or adding layers, helped bring the characters to life on screen.

Although hair and makeup didn’t require as much continuous work during filming days as some other roles, I stayed involved by assisting in other areas, and made sure everything was right for the actor's visuals on screen.

Being part of The Goldfish helped me build confidence in a production setting and taught me the importance of adaptability. Working alongside such a focused and supportive team made the experience enjoyable and productive. I’ve learned a lot about on-set dynamics, creative problem-solving, and the value of every crew role and I’m excited to apply those skills in future projects.

Costume is one of the most expressive elements. It can not only reveal the changes in people's life-style and aesthetic. It expresses emotions and conveys messages through the actors styling.
Shows the identity, character and plot of the people in the film.
The need to express different themes, emotions and atmosphere, therefore, for different themes of film and television works, their costume design solutions should be different.

Why is makeup important?

"The art of Makeup” is considered one of the most important branches of optical illusions.
Cinematic makeup can deliver any kind of information to viewers without using words or wasting time, make-up in dramas differs from ordinary make-up, as it is subjected to study as a self-stand art, because make-up has to be compatible with bright lighting, decorative angles and accessories.
