Through the small information known about Newson, it is known that he is a blue collar worker. "Newson made a living for a few years as a boatman and general handy shoreman." Newson also has a "delusion" about his relationship with Susan. While he sees her as his wife, she sees him as a legal binding.

Susan shows herself to be incredibly selfless, as all her actions are centered around benefiting those closest to her. Although she could have revealed what Michael Henchard had done to her, to both the world and her daughter, she keeps his secret. She also seeks him out solely to benefit her daughter, and not herself. For example, on page 18 it's stated that "She asked herself whether the present moment, now that she was a free woman again, were not as opportune a one as she would find in a world where everything had been so inopportune, for making a desperate effort to advance Elizabeth. To pocket her pride and search for the first husband seemed, wisely or not, the best initiatory step." She only wants to help her daughter have a better life than she did and doesn't seek to harm anybody or get revenge.

When Susan and Elizabeth-Jane come to Casterbridge, they make sure to preserve Henchard's reputation, so the town doesn't know what he has done. “We must pay our way even before we must be respectable,” replied her mother. “Mr. Henchard is too high for us to make ourselves known to him, I much fear; so we’ve only our own pockets to depend on.”

Casterbridge was described as ancient, and peaceful. "It's squareness was, indeed, the characteristic which most struck the eye in this antiquated borough, the borough of Casterbridge - at that time, recent as it was, untouched by the faintest sprinkle of modernism." I think that overall the quaintness of the town shows how Henchard's life has been ever since he sold Susan. After he repented for his actions he was rewarded with a quiet and prosperous life. The town also seems like a sort of capsule frozen in time which emphasizes the events that will occur there between Susan and Henchard. Their relationship has been revived after all this time as if they simply travelled back to the past.

The idea of self destruction can be identified as a constant theme in The Mayor of Castorbridge because of the events that unfold with Michael Henchard. He is seen as a drunk who, under the influence, makes impulsive decisions such as selling off his wife and child, which was described in the beginning of the book: "'Here- I am waiting to know about this offer of mine. The woman is no good to me. Who'll have her?" (Hardy 6).

The Value of one's good name and identity in society One's name was very important in society and a good name could get you very far. For example, the morning after the unfortunate night when Henchard sold his wife and child, one of his initial concerns is regarding whether or not he disclosed his name to anybody there the night before. Years later when Henchard in the mayor of Casterbridge, the knowledge of his previous identity could completely ruin his reputation and make him lose his current position. Even when at the Three Mariner's Inn, Susan and Elizabeth Jane are careful to not disclose their identities and being related to Henchard as it would be an embarrassment to him if his relatives were working at such a place.
