The Italian explorer Christopher Columbus believed that the Earth was a sphere. He wanted to go to India by travelling towards the west. On 3rd August 1492, three ships started the trip across the Atlantic Ocean. "Santa Maria" was the best known of the sailing boats. On the 12th October, 1492, the crew landed on an island. Columbus thought that it was India. This is why he called the people Indians.
