Song Title: The Hockey Song (sometimes mistakenly called “The Good Old Hockey Game”)

Culture: Canadian

Contextualize: This song symbolizes the love of hockey. It’s played during hockey games and at intermissions in arenas across Canada, and everyone sings along. It is recognized as a way to celebrate and share the love of Canada’s national game, Hockey. In a sense, it is Canada’s second National Anthem.

Consider: The Hockey Song uses instruments common to country music – guitar, banjo, drums. It uses a verse, chorus pattern and is easily memorized. This song is connected to Canadian past times of watching and attending hockey games while sharing the “hockey culture” of Canada with those who are unfamiliar with it.

Connection: I regularly play and watch hockey. The NHL, IIHF World Juniors and Olympics are all a part of my hockey world. Hockey is loved by all members of my family and regularly attended both local and provincial hockey team games. In the winter, we have a rink in our backyard where we play hockey as a family and extend family (uncles, cousins).
Reid

Song Title: Santa Lucia
Culture: Italian
Contextualize: This song is a perfect example of Italian classical music demonstrating loud tones and opera like singing. The relatively recent history of Italy includes the development of an opera tradition that has spread throughout the world.
Consider: In Italian music The vocal lines always dominate the tonal complex and are never overshadowed by the instrumental accompaniments as you can see in this song. String instruments in an Italian classical orchestra consist of the violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Woodwind instruments in an Italian classical orchestra include the flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. Brass instruments are among the loudest in an orchestra. Italian classical music calls for fewer brass instruments than strings or woodwinds because of its romantic, delicate nature.
Connect: My grandparents immigrated from Italy in the 1950s. They were supposed to go to Windsor Connecticut but there was a mistake and they were sent to Windsor Ontario instead.
-Noah C

Song Title: Loch Lomond

Culture: Scottish

Context: This song is a common example of 'folk music' which is a big part of the Scottish tradition and originated many years ago. A lot of the traditional Scottish folk music has been lost but its roots are connected to Irish music called Gaelic tradition. Scottish folk music has been passed down for many generations and is learned by ear and not by reading music, unlike a typical musician would do.

Consider: Traditional Scottish music uses a variety of instruments but some of the most common instruments are: Bagpipes, Fiddle, accordion, timbre, and wooden flutes. An example of this is in this song, there is a Bagpipe solo at the beginning that leads into vocals, and
clapping/stomping. Scottish music uses a lot of different time signatures they can range from 4/4 or 2/4 to 3/8 or 9/16. Folk music is quite often fast and is played often from 120-168 BPM, folk music can also be slow like this song.

Connection: My grandparents moved to Canada with their parents from Scotland at a very young age. My Moms side is Irish which kind of works out because Scottish music and Irish music are very similar

- Lincoln

Song: Three Little Birds

Culture: Jamaican

Contextualize: Bob Marley was known as a reggae artist. He was very into nature and Jamaica is blessed with a lot of exotic animals that he personally loved. Bob always used nature as a metaphor in his songs all the time, examples are the trees in "Small Axe" and the big cat in "Iron, Lion, Zion".

Consider: This song uses instruments that are native to the Reggae culture. The instruments that are used are bass, drums, electric guitar, organ, keyboard, and hang drum.

Connection: I grew up around my Jamaican culture because my Dad's side is part Jamaican and we'd always have parties and potlucks with a lot of really good Jamaican food. This song always reminds me of the parties we have and all the good vibes.

Another connection I have is that this was my favourite song. Before she passed she would always sing this song to me and would always jam out to it, it reminds me of her.

- Kiyla

Title: Erzherzog Johann Jodler

Culture: German

Contextualize: This is an example of a German folk song. Some of this song’s vocals are considered a type of yodelling. Yodelling has been around for centuries, and is often featured in folk music of many European countries, including Germany.

Consider: This song has a slow tempo and melodious sound. There are not many instruments, only a harp, guitar, and flute, so you can focus on the beautiful vocals. Germany has many different types of folk music. There is slow, flowing music such as this song, and there is upbeat music that you can dance to that features many instruments.

Connection: My grandparents grew up in Germany, and immigrated to Canada in around 1941, and this is one of my dad's favourite German folk songs.

Grace
