The teacher can assess student learning by observing their behaviors with concrete objects. They can watch the students interact with the resources and how they are able to use this hands-on experience as a way to find the area of an object. Teachers can also assess student learning by having open conversations with the students about what they learned, and how they can relate their newly acquired math skill to real-life objects or situations.

The students will be going on a virtual field trip to Egypt. From there, they will observe the physical features that make up Egypt. The students will be going to visit the Giza Pyramids to measure the area of the triangles on the pyramids and the area of the bricks of the pyramid. They will see the pyramids on the field trip and will be given measurements of the length, width, and height of the triangles and rectangles that make up the pyramids.

The students will construct a 3-dimensional pyramid using paper, tape, and scissors. They will create a net of a pyramid using a square and triangles that form the Great Pyramid, and will find the area of each using multiplication and addition. They will then add the areas to find the surface area. They will cut the shape and fold it to show how the different 2 dimensional areas create the surface area of the 3 dimensional shape. Once they find the area of each part, they will be given triangles and squares of different areas, and will form their own structure.
