We meet the main characters of the book so far: Fern, her brothers, stepfather, the woods near her house, Alkomso and Mark-Richard. Fern has a STEM fair project coming up that she has not started yet, the prize is $250. Fern lives with her step-brothers and step-father, where it appears times are sometimes rough. Fern’s mother and step-sister died in a car accident a year ago, which has placed Fern in a caregiver role for her stepbrothers. Fern’s grandfather does like Tovio, her step-father, and is the supplier of pipes to a fracking company that has started drilling in town. Fern does not know what fracking is yet, but knows that the forest she spends time in, near where she lives, will be torn down and replaced with a waste-water pond as a result of the fracking. Her Grandfather is also trying to gain custody of her and her step-brothers.

It is the anniversary of the death of Fern’s mother and sister and ferns gets up early to make bread and head out for the day with the boys. They plan to go to Alkosomo’s house to visit her family and work on their STEM projects. On the way there they stop at the Graveyard their mother is buried in. Grandpas is also at the graveyard and the two have a frosty exchange. Once at Alkosomo’s the two quickly decide they should visit the fracking site to learn for the project, so the two girls and their brothers head that way. On the road there Mr. Milner comes across the group walking on the road and warns of the trucks speeding along. Once at the site the girls discover Toivo has gone there to get a job and while the girls are distracted by this, the boys sneak into the site and cause havoc. When the boys finally get back out of the site the whole group runs down the road to avoid trouble, where Fern snaps at Alkosomo’s brother, further the tension between the two girls. The group continues back home only with Fern and her brothers walking behind and separate or Alkosomo and her brother.

On the road back from the Fracking site Fern and her brothers come up on Milner’s property and Fern interacts with Ranger. While petting Ranger they both notice a Kolsche truck barreling down the road where her brothers are playing unaware of the danger. Both Ranger and Fern spring into action but the truck does not stop fast enough. Fern is able to throw the boys in the ditch, but Ranger is hit by the truck and hurt badly. The boys are also hurt and Fern is probably concussed. Soon Miss Tassel, Toivo, grandpa, an ambulance and Milner are all there. Toivo and Grandpas get into it and Milner wraps up a badly hurt Ranger and takes him away, but not before apologizing to Fern for the accident that killed her mother and sister. At school the next day the students find out Mr. Flores has been put on leave and that their entire Science grade depends on their STEM projects. On the way home from school they Fern and boys run into Milner and Flores in the woods and Fern tells them that her STEM project is about the woods and the want to help her. The chapter ends with Toivo cleaning and prepping for Miss Tassel’s visit and her interviewing him about Fern and his ability to provide.

Grandpa shows up during Miss Tassel’s inspection and tries to intimidate her and ensure the kids end up with him. Fern is impressed by Miss Tassel’s ability to stand up to him and not be intimidated. Fern is then interviewed by Miss Tassel about her happiness, desire to live with Toivo, the forest and fracking. Miss Tassel encourages Fern to not be too hard on Toivo for doing everything he can to provide for his family. With his new job, Toivo is able to buy groceries for the family and supplies for Fern’s STEM project. After finishing her board Fern takes a bath and when she come back downstairs she realizes someone has moved her project. Her brothers took the board and added turkey feathers, seeds, nuts and deer antlers to it, so it would be less boring. At the STEM fair Fern sets up next to Alkosomo and Mark-Richard and listens attentively while judges ask them questions. Fern also answers questions about her own project both from judges and city-folk. Eventually Toivo, her brothers, Grandpa, and miss Tassel are all there and getting along fine. In the end Alkosomo and Mark-Richard win the Grand prize and Fern is initially very hurt by this. Before they leave the three students are interviewed by the newspaper about their projects and because they have sparked a lively debate about fracking in the town. Flash forward to the spring and Colter has put a moratorium on making a wastewater pond and Fern and the boys are back in the woods with foraging again.
