 -Appears to be an angel at first glance, closer inspection looks like a filthy old man with wings.
-He appears in Pelayo and Elisenda's front yard.
-He wore dirty clothes, he was bald with very few teeth.
-Very huge wings, half plucked, dirty and insect infected. 
-The old man speaks a foreign language (possibly Norwegian).

Implications
The old man exhibits extreme patience-demonstrated through extortion by villagers, torture, and harsh living conditions.
During those times angels were presumed to be fugitives of celestial conspiracy.
The people of the village have theories about his background and appearance.

Implications:
-He displays compassion because he is poor but willing to shelter the old man in the chicken coop. 
-His family is in poverty- "they had killed so many crabs inside the house that Pelayo had to cross his drenched courtyard and throw them into the sea because the newborn child had a temperature all night and they thought it was due to the stench."
