How we should teach about families in school

The video would be really good for classrooms especially in current times, because this video talks about how families are different in many ways. It is not the typical "American Family" anymore, there are a lot of different definitions of family. I think it is important to explain to students that there are different families and that each is okay, as long as our family is a support system, then our friends can even be apart of their family. As a teacher I would expect and teach that we should respect each family dynamic.

Family is a very difficult topic to teach because it is ever-changing. To me, I believe that a family is anyone that is a support system in our lives. We must teach our students that families come in many different forms and ways, in teaching this we must be aware of the different types of families in our classroom to not upset any of our students. In that we should not tell our students the different types of families that are in our class, but allow the students to tell people about their families when they are ready and confident. The reading made it important that teachers focus on different types of families so that students become more aware of the different types of families throughout the world. This will also allow students to open up about their thoughts and ideas of family.

By: Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell.... Illustrated by: Henry Cole

The Authors and Illustrator make this book a good way to allow students to see a different type of family. In the story it talks about "normal" penguin families which consist of a boy and girl, but there are two boy penguins who love to hangout with each other and always want to be with each other. This points out a family that has two dads. The author is making it clear that a family is not about gender but it is about loving ad caring for each other and their child. I would definitely add this to my classroom library, but I would add it once I have talked about this type of family and read it to the class and had a discussion about it with my class.
