-Objects from around the classroom (no same object that starts with the same letter sound).

How to Begin:

Put all objects in a basket. Then have students pull out one object at a time and tell you what the object is. Next ask them what the beginning sound is. Students that have a hard time catching the first sounds in words, the teacher can use alphabet chart for student to look at and try to remember the sounds of letters they are not sure of. Once students have mastered the beginning sounds.

What Require:

-sticky notes

-fly swatter

How To Play:

Write letters on sticky notes (upper case and lower case). Place sticky notes on the floor or table spread them out. Have students take the fly swatter when you say a sound they hit the letter of the sound you said. If students need to recognize letters you can just ask them to swatter the letter (K) and so on. This can be done as a team playing or just a small group.

Do read-alouds often to expose students to new vocabulary words and word patterns. When reading a book, students point out pictures to the new vocabulary word you want to teach them. Once you show the new picture give student a simple definition that is on their level, this will help them understand the word and the usage (WETA Washington, D.C., 2025). Read-alouds meets all levels of students by modeling fluent, expressive reading this will help students develop reading skills on their own (Kathryn Strake, 2025). Read-alouds are great exposer for ELL students. This will introduce ELL students to a wide range of vocabulary that normally they will not encounter on their own. This can help expand their vocabulary skills. 

• Duolingo is an app that parents can download to any devices and their child will be able to play the course that is designed to teach English to Spanish speakers. This will teach ELL students new vocabulary.  

• Epic is a reading and learning program. Epic gives children access to books and videos that is target to their reading level. The books are available to be read, or the system can read it to them. 

After reading a read-loud have students tell you the five things about the story, they will use their fingers to talk about each area (WETA Washington, D.C., 2025).

1. Characters: Who was in the read-aloud?

2. Setting: story took places?

3. Events: what happen in the story?

4. End: how did the story end?

5. Favorite character or part of the story.

• Have families to use online planforms such as Reading Rocket. Resources like Reading Rocket offers resources on topics to help parents help their child with their reading no matter the level their child is on.  

• The teacher can print storybooks for ELL families so they can read with their child.
