As Ramadan approaches, Muslims worldwide prepare for the annual fast, marking the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This sacred month commemorates the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad over 1,400 years ago. Ramadan is a period of spiritual renewal, self-reflection and a deepened connection with Allah and the community, offering a chance for personal growth and a closer bond with both.

Fasting during Ramadan is far more than a physical challenge; it is a spiritual journey that promotes self-discipline and reflection. From dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and fulfilling other physical needs, dedicating this time to worship and prayer.

Ramadan Activities for Kids:

In this article, we will share how you can create beautiful and lasting memories of Ramadan with your kids using these easy and simple activities and building a meaningful and worthwhile Ramadan experience for them.

1. Build a Ramadan Tent For kids

The first thing you should do is to make your child all set for Ramadan’s atmosphere and arrival. And one way to celebrate Ramadan is by building a Ramadan tent inside your house.

With the help of your child and using some colorful old fabrics, and some simple decorations you can install on it, you can easily create an amazing and cheerful space for your child. You can also add a Quran and a prayer rug to make it a special corner for your kids to pray.

2. Duaa Jar for Kids in Ramadan

What you need to do is to get an empty jar, bottle, or even a box and some colored paper. Then, you will write 30 different Duaa on 30 different pieces of paper.

Finally, put those pieces of paper folded inside the jar. And there you go. You have a jar full of Duaa for your child to pull out each day for 30 days. Besides helping your child to memorize the Duaa, this activity will also make him excited for this part of his day as children like to discover unknown things.

3. Kids Ramadan Lantern Craft

Kids are fond of crafts, and everything made with their hands. While making the craft they feel like creators or artists, and that way they get determined to get the best out of it.

And that’s why it would be such a great idea to make use of their creativity and spend time with them doing a Ramadan lantern by using hard-colored paper or any kind of used plastic, maybe even wood. This way they will love playing with it because it’s handmade with love and care.

4. Read Ramadan Stories For kids

Of course, nothing is more fun than reading stories to your children. It’s the easiest and fastest way to teach them something, whether it’s moral or academic. So, why not teach them all about Ramadan by reading one? Children have an inbuilt drive for discovery.

Garangao is a cherished tradition in Qatar, celebrated on the 14th night of Ramadan. This festivity marks the midpoint of the holy month and is especially significant for children. Dressed in vibrant traditional attire, they gather after the Maghrib prayer to sing special Garangao songs and visit neighboring homes, collecting sweets and nuts as rewards for their fasting efforts. The streets come alive with joyful processions, and communities often organize events featuring games, storytelling, and cultural activities to honor this longstanding custom. Garangao not only fosters a sense of community but also helps preserve Qatari heritage by passing down traditions to younger generations.

Allah the Exalted said : "O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, even as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may ward off evil." [Al-Baqara:183]

He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and the hope of reward will be forgiven his previous sins." It is agreed upon.

(Meaning: he who fasts Ramadan believing in the reward of Allah, seeking the pay from Allah the Exalted, and he does not intend by fasting Anyone saves Allah, his reward that Allah will forgive him all his preceded sins.)

The meaning of fast is refraining from all things that break the fast during the day of Ramadan from dawn to sunset, with intention. Allah's reward for fasting is very great, and breaking the fast during the day in Ramadan is a crime and a very great sin.

In Qatar, Ramadan follows a traditional pattern of fasting during the day and communal activities at night:

Daytime: People fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from food, drink, and smoking. The day is focused on prayer, reflection, and spiritual growth. Businesses adjust hours, and life slows down during the heat of the day.

Nighttime:

Iftar: The fast is broken at sunset with a meal, often starting with dates and water, followed by a full meal with family and friends.

Taraweeh Prayers: After Iftar, people attend special nightly prayers at the mosque, which can last up to two hours.

Socializing: The evening includes gatherings at home, visiting relatives, or attending Ramadan tents for food, tea, and cultural entertainment.

Late-Night Meals: After Taraweeh, families might enjoy light snacks like ghabga or sweets and tea.

Souq Waqif is known for being the culture hub; the one-stop shop that spells out all things Qatar. Adding to their crown of traditional elements is the strategic placement of the cannon shooting at Souq Waqif.

It is an experience of its own, as you get to witness the flare against the backdrop of the distinct Fanar Mosque minaret amongst a flock of pigeons that flutter away at the sound of it. While you can live the moment and engulf the call to prayer along with this aesthetic visual, you would want to keep your camera on standby too if you would like to capture some of the best glimpses of this golden hour moment.
