Desperado veraciously oiled and shined his skin. He was about to embark on his first journey through the digestive system, and he had no idea what to expect. He had heard rumours that before an avocado was eaten, its skin was first peeled off and then its stomach pitted, but Desperado had only thought that these were legends. Waving goodbye to his back family which included a half-rotten banana, three shiny new apples and a forgotten lemon hidden near the bottom of the fruit basket, Desperado was swept out of the basket and set on the wooden platform which he had always wondered what its use was as it stood lonely next to the coffee maker. A moment later a figure stood over him and with one sweep his most prized possession, his skin, was gone and his stomach felt empty. A spoon then gathered his still living remains, and he entered the mouth.

As Desperado made his way past the teeth he found himself sitting on wet glands. A voice spoke from under him in a mellow voice, "Hmmm...an avocado..haven't seen one of those in a while. My name is Sal Iva. My water, electrolytes, mucus, antibacterial compounds, and my apprentice, Amy Lase, will make sure that you are ready and moistened to slide down the throat easily. Salivary Amy Lase will aid in the hydrolysis of starch into the carbohydrate maltose. Oh and watch out, Betty and Frank the front teeth are about to come down on ya hard in order to ensure that you are small enough to enter the pharynx".
"What's the pharynx," asked Desperado.
"Oh, it's a dark, membrane-lined tunnel which eventually enters into the esophagus, I often hear screams from the food that travel down that way. If I were you, I'd rather be spat out then go down there!" Sal Iva then looked behind her and shouted, "Watch out and hold on! He's about to swallow!" And with that Desperado was swept down the pharynx away from Sal Iva, Amy Lase and thankfully, from Betty and Frank the front teeth. The little avocado could not comprehend what he had gotten himself into and the adventure he had just embarked upon.
A few moments later an automatic voice from an internal PA system turned on, "You have now entered the esophagus where food is further digested through peristalsis which is the involuntary contraction of the muscles which you are now surrounded by. Watch out, this may hurt." And with that Desperado was on his own again and about to experience pain, but thankfully not too much because the mouth had digested most of Desperado's body already.
"Wow so this is what it feels like," Desperado mumbled to himself, "I suppose it would feel much worse if I was a harder material, but because I'm so soft I feel like I am moving over ocean waves...not that I know what waves feel like, but I assume this is what they may be like," commented Desperado. Desperado then sat back and relaxed as he travelled down the esophagus.

A few moments later a yellow and green neon sign popped up. The bright, lit up arrow on the sign had the word stomach written under in big, bold, pink letters.
"Hmmm.. stue-mac...I wonder what that is," questioned Desperado, "I do recall Amy Lase bringing it up earlier, but my memory fails me. I do remember reading a travel brochure about it a very long time ago, and apparently, it is sometimes quite treacherous, but I suppose I shall find out what it is like soon...hopefully, my time there is not too painful," Desperado mumbled with a weak chuckle. His eyes grew large as he saw the opening to the stomach. It looked like a large j-shaped pit that continually contracted and changed sizes from large to small and small to large. Desperado could hear several voices coming from the stomach wall. As he entered the stomach, the voices became more clear.
"Hey, there new feller! Haven't seen an avocado in a while! How's Amy Lase by the way?" shouted a high pitched voice. Desperado, forgetting his manners due to all the action in the stomach, yelled back, "Who said that?"
"Oh, why, my name is Gaston Gastrin," the voice replied, "inside my glands, I churn up some lovely gastric juice. This juice will make sure that you are even more digested and will ensure your safe journey through the rest of the digestive system. Oh ya, I also make Hydrochloric Acid inside my parietal cells which if you look closely, are inside my mucus covered glands," Gaston Gastrin paused for a second, and then questioned, "Didn't you learn anything in Digestion School?"
"Well, actually I did not make it past my first class. You see I was taken from my basket at a fairly young age. Usually, humans wait until avocados are mature enough to allow us to go on this lovely holiday, but I guess the humans that ate me did not know too much about avocados," replied Desperado, and then he added "Also, one more question, why do I feel like I'm burning in here?"
"Oh that's because of me," a high pitched voice squeaked. Desperado looked around but could not find where the voice had come from. "Oh no, I'm down here, you are swimming in me. My name is Hydro-Chlory-Acid. I activate my friend Pepsin through making the pH around the 2-3 level. Pepsin is going through one of her stages right now in which she takes on a different identity and her name is Pepsinogen. As pepsinogen, she is in her inactive, lazy form and kinda just hangs around and secretes herself until she is ready to change into Pepsin. If she were Pepsin as she was growing, she would go ballistic and eat the cells that are making her". Then Hydro-Chlory-Acid leaned in and whispered into Desperado's ear, "between you and me, I think she changes identity because she is extremely self-conscious", then raising her voice, Hydro-Chlory-Acid yelled, "Oh, here she is! Pepsin come over here and introduce yourself to Avocado" yelled Hydro-Chlory-Acid.
Pepsin slowly made her way over and then introduced herself as the high chief of all the enzymes. "Hey I'm pepsin," she said very slowly, "Is it okay if I start breakin' you down into peptides?, because that's what I do, I break proteins into peptides. And to answer your question which I know you so desperately want to ask, peptides are pretty much short amino acid chains...I know, I know, it sounds like a very boring job, but trust me, it's important".
"Umm, sure, do what ya need to do," exclaimed Desperado as he relaxed against the comfy mucus produced by the goblet cells that lined the stomach wall protecting and lubricating the stomach.
~A while later:
"Wow, wow, wow! Time sure flies by, it's already been a few hours since you arrived and you need to go because your proteins have now been broken down thanks to Pepsin here," Hydro-Chlory-Acid chattered rapidly, "We sure are gonna miss ya."
"Well, thank you everyone" smiled Desperado, "The longest part of my holiday is over.. Make sure to keep in contact!" And with that Desperado was off on the next part of his journey.

Small Intestine

Another brightly coloured neon sign popped up as Desperado flew out of the stomach. I read, "Welcome to Duodenum; the first section of the Small Intestine." At first, all was silent as Desperado and the acid chyme, which the stomach had made, flowed into the beginning of the Duodenum. But then an eruption of humming bounced off the walls of the small intestine, and Desperado noticed that he was not alone anymore. In fact, he had been churned up with all this other food, and now they all looked like a greenish smoothie of chyme which the stomach had mechanically churned up by its muscle fibres. But what was that humming noise? It now sounded like the flow of water, and like someone had read Desperado's mind, he heard a voice from somewhere around him saying, "Well folks, here comes the secretin sneaking out of the walls around you and me. They'll page the bicarbonate ions in the pancreas, which is just to your right, which like a swat team, I might add, regulate our pH levels to around an 8-9 pH, just above the normal levels. Thanks be to God for that or else Pepsin would be here bringing with her, her cloud of gloom. Ha, without these guys we'd burn up the duodenum. And an advance warning, don't mess with these guys, they bite!" The voice paused for a second as if recollecting its thoughts allowing Desperado just enough time to digest what was going on around him. A moment later the voice started up again, "Oh, and here comes the bile from the liver and gall bladder which will break down the fat in us into liquid droplets and that light, the rippling sound is enzymes coming from the pancreatic duct. These substances are like a construction crew who will do the majority of the digestion of food. I'm sure the rest of the digestive crew in this area of the small intestine would love to tell you what they do, so just sit back, relax and enjoy!" And with that, the voice once again disappeared.
Desperado heard a sudden peep come from behind him, "Hey...I know this is your first time down this way, so I'll introduce you to my enzyme crew", in a rap like voice the enzyme began his speech, "We are the enzyme crew. We physically digest things for you. I'm Trypsin, I just recently changed my whole look from the boring Trypsinogen to this cool thing thanks to my main man Eddy Enterokinase" he exclaimed as he admired himself in the shiny small intestine walls. While still looking at himself he commented, "Oh, and I help break down the proteins in you. And this dude next to me is Ed'Erepsin. He's a protein with a crazy fashion sense, and he breaks down the protein in foods into peptides and amino acids, he's also my hair stylist." Pointing to the light brown enzyme, Trypsin opened his mouth to introduce her, but Desperado cut him off exclaiming excitedly,
"Amy Lase! How are ya, I didn't realize you also worked down here! Oh my goodness, it's so nice to see a familiar face!"
The light brown enzyme smiled back at him and then quickly launched into a speech which she had obviously rehearsed and said many times before, "Well, actually, you're referring to my second cousin once removed Amy Lase who works in the mouth, right?" Not allowing Desperado to respond Amy Lase quickly continued, "Ya, we're often mistaken for each other, but hey, if there is anyone I'd rather be mistaken for, it's her!!" She stopped for a second, recollecting her thoughts and the quickly changed subjects, "Anyways...I actually break down carbohydrates. Oh, and this is my bestie Lil'Lipase!! Everyone likes her the most because she breaks down all the fats! But of course, I can't forget about the bile salts in the liver and help make the area, that Lil'Lipase works in, larger." And with that Amy Lase disappeared as quickly as she had appeared.
At this point, Trypsin was off sulking because Amy Lase had interrupted him. Desperado decided to cheer him up by asking him some more questions. He was a little confused about what the pancreas was and the gall bladder. Trypsin soon explained that the pancreas was another organ that helped with digestion and that its pancreatic juice which it sends to the duodenum further digests starch, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins. Desperado learned that the gall bladder was an accessory organ for digestion and that it was cholecystokinin which the duodenum produced and then released which caused the gall bladder to release its bile. This shattered the rumour that Desperado had so desperately hoped was true which he had heard from his fruit basket that it had in fact housed the monarch avocados and that they ruled the Digestive System. Heartbrokenly he listed to the explanation of the highly vascularized liver and that it was yet another accessory organ for digestion, and that it produces bile and bile salts which break down and disintegrate lipids. At this point Desperado was beginning to feel weary about, what he had thought, to be his impenetrable skin, for it turned out that the majority of food which Desperado had met during his early years living in the fruit basket, were so easily broken up and churned into chyme.

Suddenly, Desperado was propelled out of the duodenum and into winding tunnels with walls made of folded epithelial tissue. As Desperado made his way through the tunnels he felt a mixing sensation, it felt like parts of his body were being mixed together with the rest of the chyme. That's when he saw the walls start to contract. He dodged this way and that but was unable to dodge the smooth muscle walls which he then got dragged along by. That's when he saw dozens of security guard's lining the walls around him. The man then opened his mouth and said something that Desperado was unable to make out because his voice was so soft and quiet. But Desperado felt a pulling sensation, as if parts of him were being pulled away into the wall of the Jejenum. "Nooooo!," he shouted, "My nutrients, where are they going?""
"Eh, quite down now" said a voice with a Canadian accent behind him, "Don't worry, the walls here absorb our nutrients, it's a very normal process. My dad told me all about it".
"Oh, thank goodness, I thought I was dying", sighed Desperado in relief. When most of the nutrients from the chyme was absorbed Desperado entered the last section of the small intestine.

The final part of Desperado's adventure was coming to an end. But before he could leave there was one more thing left to do. As the chyme, with Desperado mixed in it, entered the Large Intestine (colon) the last bit of the undigested chyme was fully digested through peristalsis, and the last bit of water, vitamins and electrolytes in the chyme was absorbed leaving Desperado harder and a darker colour than he had ever been before. He saw E. Coli the rapper, and the twin's Vitamin B and K. There was also lots of pouches in the walls of the smooth muscle. Suddenly, a loud rumbling rocked the Large Intestine and Desperado, along with the rest of the chyme, was flushed out of the large intestine and into the last section of the Large Intestine; the 🤬 which looked like a compartment and where Desperado was compacted with the rest of digested food around him.
