They say twins make up for each other's weaknesses. Noah is the lonely, more talented, and logical twin brother. In contrast, Jude is the outgoing, popular, and active twin sister. However, they both loathe themselves for who they are. They do not know this but they both want to be each other. Noah wishes to be active and Jude wants to be talented. In class, Jude nervously stands next to her art piece while she waits for the evaluation of the sculpture. After getting the same insults and results, Jude believes that “it’s Noah who belongs at this school, not [her]” (25). This statement indicates that Jude doesn’t feel qualified to be placed into a school for the talented. Jude managed to get into the school and still she continues to tell herself she does not deserve it, but in fact Noah should be there. This can develop the stinging she feels getting teased by her classmates about her art because she wants the same skills that Noah has for art. In Noah’s perspective, he has a strong desire for Jude’s attributes. This is demonstrated through the thoughts he hears in his mind. “If it weren’t for Jude being your twin… Doesn’t it bother you to be picked last on every team? Doesn’t it bother you to be alone all the time?” (78) he listens. These voices he hears in his head emphasize the pain and torment he feels being himself. Even though he has talent, he gets bullied, unwanted, he doesn’t have any other person to be with except Jude. This develops Noah’s self hatred of being himself and increases his want for change.

As Noah and Jude grew older, they both had found a passion for art which had connected them both together. Noah on one hand has a deep passion for art. He believes that he is the creator of his own invisible museum. He is very passionate about his art and he makes portraits based off of the happy and traumatic parts of his life. He just cannot restrain himself from drawing what ever he sees. At least that's how he felt. Jude, his twin sister on the other hand is very shy about her art. She is also very jealous because she cannot compete with her brother when it comes to art. She is intimidated by her brother’s art and her art-professor mother's admiration of Noah’s drive and talent. They are both told by their mother to "join art school"(61) and Jude gets mad because of the fact that her own mother is praising Noah's work and not hers. Jude goes on to forget about art and she starts a new social life with new friends and peers.

Jandy Nelson uses hyperbole to express Noah's exaggerated yet unique perception of the world around him. For example, Noah states how if his mother passed away, it would be the equivalent to " the Sun [going] out" (Nelson 20). This comparison compares Noah's relationship with his mother; how her presence brings light to every situation, even when he feels uncomfortable in them. Her aura brings joy to his life and he simply couldn't live the same without her. Thus, comparing his mother's untimely death to the world becoming dull could possibly become a reality in his eyes, because of how much he loves her.

THEME

In this text, the writer seems to be exploring ideas about diligence, bravery, courage, and exploring oneself. The author attempts to explore the abstract concept of diligence when describing Jude’s artwork. After several tries, Jude’s artwork ended up being a disastrous blob. However, Jude’s blob artwork allows people to “feel the pain of the whole wide world… because we are all broken… The whole wide world is. We try to do our best and this is what happens, time and time again” (Nelson 30). In other words, the author may have included this art piece because it developed the theme of diligence in some ways. The author may be trying to convey that diligence is essential in life because life is filled with setbacks and loss, and these obstacles can cause a mountain of misery without diligence and the ability to move on. On the other hand, the author may also be trying to write about bravery, courage, and exploring oneself throughout chapters in which Noah is the narrator. Noah constantly describes how nature is so beautiful, filled with millions of colors. When Jude wanted Noah’s drawing of the naked English drunk guy, she was willing to give the “trees, stars, [and] oceans” (74). However, Noah also wanted the Sun, so Jude responded, “I’ll give you the Sun” (74). Clearly, this was how the author came up with the title of the book, and I believe that this moment has to correlate with the theme of the story in some ways. Later on in the story, Noah describes the Sun in a way that makes the Sun represent bravery and spirit. Moreover, it may represent Noah’s determination to explore head first, “outside the lines” (83). In words, this moment evidently helps shape the deeper meaning of the novel. Right after Jude gave Noah the Sun, he started to change a bit. When he met Brian, he started to talk, laugh, and have some fun. Furthermore, he kind of stood up to Zephyr and Big Foot. I believe that the action of Jude giving the Sun to Noah represents Noah’s transformation from a shy and closed off person to a shy and open person. It shows how Noah was able to come out of his shell and open the doors to his Invisible Museum. Therefore, the symbol of the Sun must relate to an important theme of the story: it takes courage and bravery to explore oneself and to open up to someone or everyone, but after the first major leap, things may get better in some ways. The last part of this theme may be incorrect because Noah's future is still uncertain. However, it does seem that he is feeling happier and more optimistic than normal when he is around Brian.

The writer uses the flashback-flash forward technique in order to foreshadow future events. The book is written in the format in which Noah is narrating their thirteen year old selves and Jude is narrating their sixteen year old selves. In Noah's perspective, he mentions how him and Jude, " were keeping each other company...before [their] soul[s] even got delivered" (Nelson 79). This conveys that Noah and Jude always had each other when there was no one else, and that they would always have each other. However, in Jude's perspective, she brings up that she, "want[s] to grab [her] brother's hand and run back through time" (Nelson 55). Furthermore, projecting that Noah and Jude had lost each other over the years, and that the writer is going to fill in the gaps to tell the whole story.

The novel’s opening scene establishes that Noah is an outsider and a loner who values art above human connection. It also features the bullies’ misunderstanding of Noah’s fixation with Michelangelo’s David, one of the most famous nude sculptures in history, to introduce how uncomfortable Noah is both with his own sexuality and others’ perception of it. As the text keeps going there are contuse active themes of identity, self expression, art, and fear. In moments of hardship or discomfort, Noah turns to the “invisible museum” within his mind (like this imagined portrait) as a means to comfort himself, cope with his feelings, or mentally escape the situation at hand. Noah’s embarrassing sexualized response to being in such close proximity to another male body demonstrates how starved he is for connection, even when it’s accompanied by anger, ridicule, or derision. Noah again retreats into the invisible museum in order to escape his shame. As Noah narrowly escapes even more intense harm and humiliation, he turns to his art for comfort, escape, and as a way to process his feelings. This scene establishes the family dynamics between the individual members of the sweet wine clan. (83) Jude and Noah’s whimsical nature comes directly from their mother, who encourages—against her husband’s protestations—fanciful ideas in her children. Noah is insecure about his relationship with his father and in thrall to his mother, and is both intensely close to and fearful of his twin Jude.

When both Noah and Jude speak about each other they both make assumptions. For instance, Noah assumes that Jude acts different towards him “on account of her hating [him]”(57) when this isn’t at all true. Jude assumes the same thing. She has made up in her head that “he hung up”(55). Since each of them assumes that the other hates them and wants nothing to do with each other they avoid each other. They “repel each other”(55) when deep down both of them just want their relationship to go back to the way it was when they were kids, they want to be best friends again. This shows how important communication is because a lack of it can lead to things happening that neither person wants, just like what happened to Noah and Jude.

I noticed that Noah has changed his appearance since his mother's passing, when Jude mentions how " This Noah also goes out with girls, keeps his hair buzzed and tidy, hangs out at The Spot, [and] watches sports with Dad" (Nelson 145). From this observation, I can infer that Noah is trying to protect himself by destroying all traces of what he once had to himself: his art, his curly hair, Brian, and his mother; which is now all gone. He does this as a coping mechanism from his Mom's death in order to not feel bad if something/someone else he loves will be taken away from him, so he'll no longer be disappointed or astound by the news like he was when he was 14. Another thing that I have noticed is Jude adding in "This" to the statement rather than describing Noah as himself. The use of "this" considers Noah as not like himself but just another version of Noah, one that, according to Jude, "signifies one thing: death of the spirit" (145). Just how when Noah once mentioned that "the Sun would go out" if his Mom died, I feel almost as if in Noah's world the Sun really has gone out, in fact, he might never look at the world the same way he did when his mother was alive (20).

The author's use of the metaphor of the sunless planets reveals a theme of companionship and friendship. Brian teaches Noah about planes that “get ejected from the planetary systems that they first belonged in and they just wander on their own through deep space, going their way across the universe without a sun.” He describes these planets as lonely and drifting. I think that this metaphor conveys that every person should have a “sun” or a best friend to help guide them through their life and to be there for them when they need it. Another thing that the author tries to express through this metaphor is that if you go through life alone, without the companionship of friends, family and other loved ones, you will be like the sunless planets, alone and drifting through space.

The writer uses figurative language in order to develop a conflict that Jude faces. The figurative expression, " I taste guilt right through the citrus" (Nelson 144), conveys a sense of shame and responsibility that Jude feels based on Noah's new behavior. Noah confirms with Jude if it's all right to have a party at their house, causing Jude to feel distressed knowing that he wouldn't be this way if it wasn't for all the times she hurt him. Jude even remarks how she "hate[s] how nervous it makes [her] to be near him now" (Nelson 144). Jude knows that if she hadn't went into the closet with Brian at the party and he hadn't sent pictures of her work to CSA then he would be happy. Furthermore, the writer uses figurative language to emphasize the feeling of guilt Jude now faces based on her previous actions.

Jandy Nelson uses Anaphora many times throughout this book. She uses Anaphora to emphasize how Jude is supposed to carve art. Nelson uses the phrase "Thou art" many times to make it seem as if the instructions are commanding her on how to make carved sculptures. Nelson wrote "Thou shalt be bold and courageous. Thou shalt take chances. Thou shalt wear protective gear.(BECAUSE THER'S ASBETOS IN THE DUST!). Thou shalt have no preconceptions about what is inside the practice rock but shall wait for the rock to tell thee directly."(Nelson 206) Nelson continues this lecture for another page an a half and she also jokes about it sounding like the commandants that god gave Moses to tell the people. The way Jandy Nelson used the Anaphora is very interesting because it is one of the most used Writing techniques in this book. She elaborates a lot about why she uses this writing technique right in the text. She tells the reader that she uses it so that it sounds like the commandments(206).

When Noah was at Brian’s going away party, Brian and Jude were chosen to go into the closet together, alone. This broke Noah’s heart, and he was unable to wrap his head around the fact that Brian did not care about him anymore. As he left the party, he was “feeling like [he was] falling off [his] feet with every step… [He looked] toward the woods, [watching] all the trees crash down” (Nelson 137). Clearly, he is so crushed by this that not even the trees could calm him down. Although he was feeling a bit angry and sad about Brian not spending his last moments with Noah, after seeing his sister with Brian, his whole world was crashing down on him. Nothing in the world was able to bring him back from the darkness, not even nature or a little conversation with the English drunk man. I found it interesting that the author chose to continue including this character in the story. This man possibly holds more significance than one would think. The author may be trying to show that that man may become Noah’s future if he does not get a grip on his reality.
After coming home, Noah deletes all the pictures of Jude’s amazing artwork, wiping “them out, one by one, until every trace of [his] sister’s talent is gone from the world and only [his] is left...Next, [he returns] to [his] room and [starts] on the drawings of Brian--it takes forever to tear them all to pieces, there [were] so many...Tomorrow [he’s] going to throw [Brian], every last bit of him, over Devil’s Drop” (141). Sadly, Noah clearly does not react well to what happened at the party, and he is willing to destroy his bonds with Jude and Brian. In other words, this moment in the story was extremely important toward the development of Noah’s, Jude’s, and Brian’s characters because it emphasizes that Noah is very sensitive and cares a lot about Brian. Furthermore, when things go south in his life, he tries to make himself feel better by ignoring the truth by destroying all the precious memories he had with Brian and making others feel more pain instead of him by trying to destroy Jude’s talent. This scene also reveals that Jude has changed completely. This moment shows that Jude is committed to being that girl, breaking the hearts of both Noah and their mom. Finally, this moment emphasizes that Brian does not want to be hurt as much as Noah does not. Like Noah, he is afraid of expressing himself because he does not want to bear the pain of losing another important person in his life because he will move back home soon.

Noah has always been a lonely and shy and non-standout kid at school. However, one day he met a new student who he thought understood him. Noah thought they had this special bond together. Noah and Brian would always hang out together, talking to each other, and Noah thought they were sharing memories. For Noah, Brian impacted his life positively, however now they seem to be moving away. At this one moment, Brian and Noah were approached by a group of “hornets.” The hornets wanted to play a game with them, which Noah doesn’t like the sound of. Noah then proceeds to make excuses to leave and in theory, Brian would have followed. However, to Noah’s disappointment and realization, Brian “just says, ‘later’” (114) and leaves Noah alone. After this incident, Noah concludes that he and Brian had nothing special, Brian just “mistakenly befriended him before the cool kids came along and [rightfully] saved him” (114). Another event happened at the end of Brian’s going-away party. The hornets, Brian, and Noah were playing a game, but it backfired for Noah. For some reason Jude was there hand in hand with Brian about to enter the closet. This drives Noah down a deep hole because after everything that has led up to this point, Noah assumes Brian betrayed him. After running back home, Noah “starts on the drawing of Brian… [tearing] them all to pieces… and [later planning] to throw him, every last bit of him, over Devil’s Drop” (141). Noah’s actions of ripping everything and tossing it away seems to be an action of trying to forget experiences/memories. Noah essentially desires to erase Brian from his memories, never wanting to have him in his life. Throughout these pages, events slowly weaken Brian’s and Noah’s friendship to the point of which Noah feels hatred.

The writer uses anaphora in order to show Noah doesn't care about who he's become nor what others think. We can see this as he list the things he doesn't worry about. By repeatedly saying " I don't worry," about stealing mom and Jude's friends, about Brian and hornets posing for him, or that it isn't as hard as he thought to pretend to be everyone else. This comes to show Noah has changed and by using I don't worry he adds a carless tough to show he doesn't mind the things going on around him. As well as that he's showing himself that he has changed,
to save himself from the sadness of his mothers death.
