Modal verbs are verbs that show possibility, intent, ability, or necessity.

Examples of modal verbs are:

can (I can speak Spanish and English), could (I could speak French when I was five.), may (Denis may become the youngest President of Ecuador ever.), might (It might rain in the afternoon.), must (I must study English.), ought to (You ought to learn to use the word “ought.”), shall (The good news is I shall be able to join my fiancée at her meeting next month.), should (Everybody around the world should learn how to speak in English language.), will (The next Olympic Games will be in Quito,Ecuador.) and would (My fiancée said she would always love me.)

Modal verbs are also used to express certain hypothetical conditions, such as advisability, capability, or requests. These verbs are used alongside a main verb to inflect its meaning.

The modal verbs are very important in interpreting meaning and intent and the importance also lies in we can use them to let the other person know what we really strive for and want during communication.

"can" expresses ability and request. More examples: I can speak English. Can you speak in English language, please?
