I warmly welcome children every morning and as a routine help them to undress, hang up their bags, bring in their lunch ,wash hands and involve in a quiet activity for the start of every day. Next followed by circle time, morning snack and teacher directed activity, then we do outside activities and then lunch and Nap time just to name a few .this helps children to integrate and transition every morning as they live home to the daycare which the first place after living their homes. STRUCTURE helps children learn to practice all by themselves selves and build positive behaviours and good relationships. They learn to share and take turns, say sorry to their friends when hurt . All this helps build EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT. They learn to respect parents ,teachers, and interact with friends. By following routines and structure make children confident, secure and feel save with me and the daycare.

Through routine children will develop the ability to switch from one activity to the other.

It will help to cater for individual preferences. For example some children will love reading either during circle time or free play time, others building with blocks individually or with other children.Other children will like outdoor play and this will stop them from being bored because they will engage themselves in different activities.

I greet the children every morning and when they come in they free play for a bit and then they separate to other sides of the daycare. Then after we do circle time and wash up for snack. Then the kids free play and then we try and sing songs and then we clean up and go outside so they can get tired before nap time and run around so they can burn some of that energy in their system. It will help the children each day that if we keep doing the things we are doing they will start to get into the routine.

Structure will help the children know how to share and take turns.

Routine is very important at our daycare, since it builds a peaceful , steady space where kids feel safe. Knowing what comes next helps little ones gain confidence and reduces tantrums. Like in our daycare kids ask to play outdoors before snack time we might say snack come first. Thanks to their grasp of the schedule they usually nod along and hang tight without fuss.

And being organized keeps things moving fast. We know what’s coming up or what next to do, since we have time table at work. Makes the job easy. And it helps the kids stay on track. In general, steady patterns help us handle our roles with less stress, at the same time giving our little ones a sense of safety, care and motivation to learn more.

Vanissa

Structure and routine helps kids to develop healthy habits. It reduces anxiety which makes transitioning from one activity to another easy. When kids know what next to do and what to expect they are happy and look forward to coming to daycare and less stress or crying during drop off. For example on Tuesdays I call it ‘library’ day and allow kids to bring their favourite books from home. This has them excited and they even help with suggestions to add to the program. It also helps to know the kids strengths and weaknesses and plan accordingly.

Routine & Structure helps the kids develop skills like time management that will help them when their are older. They are also excited when the master/ remember certain parts of the program.

Langa

A classroom without structure and routine can be chaotic. Children may feel bored, uneasy, very hyper and hard to manage. That is why structuring is needed for them to have a consistent routine. This will also guide us in creating the right learning space.

In all the classes that I worked with, we made sure to have our scheduled routine. This gives the day a smooth flow and at same time the children also knows what comes next. This will help them transition fast and feel comfortable throughout the day.

With structuring, flexibility is still needed. It doesn’t mean that if something is planned, it must be followed strictly. Working with young children is not always perfect. Things can change quickly or unexpected situation arises like child’s meltdowns wherein giving comfort is more important than doing the planned activity. Another one is staying longer outdoors if the weather is nice. Being flexible allows us to meet the children’s needs while keeping the good flow of the day. Attached here is an example of the routine that we made for the class where I worked. One for preschool and one for infants.

Freda
